Hello
Just received a pair of QS8s and full metal brackets. Figured I'd see if the FBBs work better than the standard "T" brackets. Can't find any T brackets with the speakers. Did you all receive any mounting brackets with your QS8s?

Yes, the standard T-brackets came with my QS8's in the same box. That's stange they were not sent with yours. Call Axiom.

Given the choice between the FMB and the standard "T" brackets, I'd use the "T" bracket in a heartbeat. More secure, and much easier to install.

I agree with Craig. In the vast majority of cases, you have absolutely no need to "tilt" the wall-mounted QS surrounds vertically or horizontally. They are designed to be flat-mounted on the wall, and for this purpose the standard T brackets will do much better.

I got some QS8's from the FO recently. They came with the T brackets.

BUT - the brackets are designed to impossibly close tolerances, and if the corresponding brackets on the speakers are mismounted by even a fraction of an inch or a degree or two, they do not work at all. I grabbed a file and made the necessary modifications in 15 minutes or so, but was a little frustrated. The fine folks at Axiom said they are looking at a redesign of that part.

I would agree that the FMB is functional overkill and aesthetically worse than flush-mounting.

To expand on what Tom said, using the T-brackets gets even more dicey if you have to use wall anchors, since the wall anchors have to go in before actually mounting the bracket. So, you have to do your best to get the anchors lined up exactly with the T-bracket for when you screw the bracket into the wall. I came close to screwing this up, but thankfully, it worked.

D'oh! My bad. I found the T-brackets in the bottom of the box under the packing materials. Disaster if off by a fraction of inch. I know my next problem. I'm going to try the T brackets. Got all excited when I realized that there's an attic over the bedroom (crawly space), so I can run speaker wires up there, drill some holes and drop them down to the QS8s.

Of course, I always remember the gas man in Mission Viejo who opened up the sliding panel to a crawl space, stuck his head up with a flash light to see what was going on, and got bitten in the FACE by a rattle snake. I think I'll send up Mr. Hampster first. Just kidding. True story though.

The only thing you have to worry about biting you in a dark attick is a grue.

A grue is a carnivorous predator, native to the land of Zork. Grues have a predilection for dark places, and a taste for adventurers. Nobody knows what one looks like, as none who have encountered one have survived to tell the tale.

No worries mate.. You don't even need to use all the holes for mounting the bracket.. It's wayyyyy over built.. Four holes per each !? Two or three (for each 4 hole plate) is plenty.. It's only sheer weight we're working on..
As for alignment, the supplied template works like a charm.. Drywall is so forgiving, you can be off a tad and still make it work, without making a mess of it..

LFE ! The rest is just details..

I hate my plaster walls... Very unforgiving, and they chip. And the wood lathe backing (lathing?) makes it a P.I.T.A. to mount things.

I've been pretty lucky with the knuckle-test method, though.

I thought they were pretty easy to align, and got great results. I just measured up from the floor how high i wanted, held the bracket up and placed a level on the top of the "T". I got my all purpose sharpie (god, i love those things) and completely colored in the holes I wanted to mount it by. I only used 3 anchors, the ones on each side of the top of the "T" and the one at the bottom. They are up perfectly straight, and very secure. I think the achors I used were rated at 20 lbs...so I think 3 of them can hold up this small of a speaker with no issues.

It's a great SIMPLE bracket.

2x6, just dry-fit the speakers onto the brackets BEFORE you mount the brackets on the wall. AND keep track of which bracket goes with which speaker. You'll probably be fine, but mine had an obvious problem.

They sound absolutely amazing. Full, rich, diffuse. I've started listening to regular old TV in 5-channel stereo. Very satisfying.

Thank you all, Tom, 2pecker, everyone, for your help. I'm going to get up into the attic to wire the speakers and drop the wires through the ceiling, mount the brackets and speakers this Thursday. I'll report back. Really looking forward to hearing the music!

BTW, I agree, multichannel TV is just fine. I've been listening in synthesized 7 channel for a while now, and me likey!

if you are going to do that, you might be able to put a 2x4 between the studs, then use longer screws w/out anchors, and probably only use two.

How would you do that without first removing the drywall, though?

Yup, I only fastened the vertical part of the T bracket into the studs with 2" woodscrews (only two screws per bracket, using a $20 electronic stud finder). They are holding the speakers rock solid.

I would have LOVED to find a stud anywhere near where I wanted to mount my QS8s. I am living in a brand new apt complex, and they ahve the weirdes stud setup. They are every 36", but are 4" wide (Found this out thanks to my $20 Electric stud finder).

Drywall anchors are more than enough IF you do not have a stud available.

Marcus, you are forgiven, since at least you tried with the right tool.

cut the 2x4 1/4" larger and force it between the studs, then the screws from the bracket would hold it in position. this is all prefaced by being able to reach the spot with your arm. if need be, cut shorter than the stud size, fashion a hook out of wood to hold the stud, then release the hook after the bracket holds the piece of wood in position.

I read that three times and don't understand. ??? How do you access the space behind the drywall to mount the extra 2x4 without first cutting away some drywall?

down thru the attic. may need to remove 2x4 header, and i'm assuming it's an interior wall or the wire could not be fished. if a 2x4 is too thick, use a piece of strapping. in worst case, use a piece of strapping nailed to another piece of strapping. make a tee shape out of it with the long length the usual 8 foot long. slide down the tee between the two walls. secure the bracket on the exterior of the wall, and if required, cut off the remaining length of the tee. have i over complicated this. it's kinda like all you computer guys telling us non-computer guys how to do all the fancy stuff you guys do. oh, you could attach the wires too.

Ok, I'm starting to get the picture now. I'd forgotten about the attic and the ability to look down in between the studs from up there. I love how home improvement is much more art and ingenuity than science.

Lath and plaster !! Oh man, I hate that stuff.. Old home construction material.. You see it on the likes of "This Old House", etc all the time.. I feel your pain..
Our main house is allllll lath n plaster, and just hanging up a picture is an ordeal.. Instant 'make a mess', if you know what I mean..
The rooms I added to the stand alone garage are drywall.. Now that is the stuff Kingdoms are made of !!! hahaha..
"My" two rooms are "Mine", and my wife is not allowed to bring in any of her girl-flower-smelly-pretty stuff.. It's a rule set down in stone.. (well, in drywall anyway)
She doesn't mind, she has the entire main house to potpourri to death.. Gag !
Amazing what you can do with a few 2x4's, a couple a sheets of rock, and a fist full of nails... Arrf aarrffff !!!

LFE ! The rest is just details..
