What's better is really subjective. Reason I am going with in/on walls in my theatre room is because I like the "clean" look, and the room is not all that big.

What you mention is similar to my plans. Recess the screen about 8" , slightly angle the sides and bottom towards the seating area, and install the W22's/W150 in the false wall around the screen. Really the reason I am not using a normal speaker in the cavity is I don't want to build the false wall more than 10" deep. The price is the same (less actually because you don't have to buy stands), the sound is 95% the same, so why not?
