I have upgraded my HT receiver (it is an Onkyo 876). It pushes 140 watts per channel. Now I want to upgrade my speakers. I am building a Rythmik DS1500 vented box with a H500peq. I am in transition to a large room (around 7000 cubic feet). My budget is around 2k for speakers. I would like to purchase the LCR and QS8. What am I missing if I chose the M60 vs the M80? Would my receiver drive the M80 fine?

First off, welcome to the forum  . Your Onkyo should have no problem driving the M80's or any other Axiom speaker. The M80's have a massive power handling and would be a perfect fit for your very large room. The QS8's are a must as well! Also if you order from the factory outlet (A-stock/B stock) you get 10% off and if your order contains 5 or more items ($30 or more) you receive an additional 5% off...something to consider. The M80 has a little more detail/clarity on the top end, but its a subtle difference you will only notice in a direct A/B comparison.
The M80s do have noticably more bass though. Do you have or are you planning on getting a sub?

Fred, I think he is building a Rythmik. That receiver should work fine, but I would wait until you get a few other opinions from current owners. Historically, Onkyo has not had a great track record with the m80 4ohm design and gets mixed reviews. Later models seem to do better. On paper it looks good, but in the real world some have had issues.
My room is 1,000 cu ft bigger than yours, and I've used both m60's and m80's, in either case they will both do a great job.

I am building a Rythmik DS1500 with the matching 500 watt amp. I talked with axiom and they told me the M60v2 would be fine with this room. I have like $1700 US saved for this (this amount is entirely for the speakers, I already paid for the sub), so the M60v2 with the VP150 and QS8's are more in my budget. I was just wondering if I would even notice the difference since I am going to be using this sub.
Has anyone match the rythmik with the Axioms? This has been a long process trying to make a decision.

I don't know if I was unclear in my last post. I asked two questions:
Debate I want the M80 but the M60 is more in my budget. Will I be disappointed with the M60 for this size of room. I keep wondering if my sub will help the M60 fill the room. It sounds like there is not a huge difference between the M60 and the M80.
Has anyone here matched a Rythmik with the Axioms.
Use= 70% HT 30% music but I am thinking this will change when I finally get some decent speakers.
I have been shopping the factory outlet for the speakers I want. I tell you, I have bounced from Klipsch, Polk, Paradigm, ascend to Axiom. This seems like such a big purchase and I live in a small city where the only kind of speaker to actually listen to is Klipsch. The only one in my price range, that I liked was the RF82. All the reviews I have read are outstanding for the Axiom (plus I like the QS8's)

Your post is clear. I was reading challenged earlier today.
The M60s sound great all on their own and will be more than enough even in a large room. The differences between the 60s and the 80s outside of bass in a 2.0 situation are very subtle. I would not have hesitated to go with the 60s if I had a similar budget restriction.
My original expected use was 90% music 10% movies, but damn do movies sound good with a proper system.
The QS series are among the best, if not the best, surrounds in the industry.
You will get good value for your money (trust me, I'm a cheap bugger) out of Axiom. Certainly better than lower mid line Klipsch.

I believe the receiver I purchased is a newer model:
TXSR876 Some of the lower line Onkyos shut down under the higher current demand of the 4 Ohm M80s. There are a couple of people here who have used a 7 or 8 series Onkyo with the M80s with no issues.

I would also mention that while the M80's definitely put out more bass, the M60's do a pretty tremendous job on their own. I've had a few people over that have asked where I am hiding my sub... which I do not have yet. Granted my listening area is very small, which probably contributes the most to this effect.

Bill, I started with the 60's for a few years and loved every minute of them. However, the m80 posse on this forum kept telling me I've got to get 80's. Am I glad I did, yes, do i miss my 60's, yes. For the small price difference, you may want to get the 80's, that way you won't ever get upgradeitis, it is a bad condition.

Bill, I too have debated M60 or M80 for my purchase. The M60s would have fit my budget and my room better, but then I would always wonder how much better things would have sounded with the M80s, like the girlfriend you never married but always wonder about. I ordered the best I could so I would have no regrets later.

I had the 60s and even though I can afford the 80s I'll be buying the 60s again. It was the QS8s that drew me to Axiom, they are amazing speakers. 60s or 80s? either way you can't go wrong. Good luck and have fun with this.

Heh heh, I was familiar with the brand, but only due to previous posts here. I always pictured his icon to be the truck version because of it's height.  However, I am now convinced it's Gasotron, the newest Transformer. Perhaps I shouldn't have bought my morning coffee at that artsy little coffee shop with the sweet smoke smell in it. Another thing to keep in mind Bill is that you aren't quit as committed when you buy into Axiom as you are other companies because of their 'trade-up' program. With other speaker companies if you buy a set of speakers and in 6 months you feel like you've out grown them, you either have to sell them yourself and then buy another pair of speakers (a considerable loss usually), or just own two sets of speakers (even worse money wise). But with Axiom if you go with the M60's and next year you have some tax money kickin around or something and you feel like you would like to go with bigger speakers, simply trade yours back in and get the M80's and Axiom will give you a much better return price on your M60's than you would be able to get on the free market.
This is one reason why I was originally not too worried about getting the EP600. I figured I could always move up to the EP800 sooner or later without any big expenses to consider. But finding out the EP800 was available through the factory outlet changed my mind real quick like. So if budget concerns limit you to the M60 for now I wouldn't worry too much about it. You may just find you've found an excellent speaker while saving $400 dollars at the same time!
