Hello,
I've got a set of M80's on the way and was thinking it might be a good time to upgrade my receiver as well. Here's the thing, I have seperate amps for the LCR, so I don't need alot of power but want all the toys. I found a used Onkyo TX-SR805 for $750.00. These is in the high end of the price range though. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Check the reviews of the 805, I think there is a big jump in quality and toys one step up the food chain. Also, the new Denons give all you could want, but not sure of the products in that price class that have pre-outs. If you could find a one generation old Denon 3000 series, you would be in a very good place with all the toys except the new wide/high channels.

$750.00 seems too pricey for a used 805. You might want to check out http://www.accessories4less.com for Onkyo factory reconditioned recievers.

Once you're about the couple hundred dollar mark, no one is building receiver which have obvious audible defects. They all sound the same.
What it comes down to is specs. Since you don't need a big, internal amp, the higher end models can be scratched off the list. Just pick the feature set you know you want, and work from the bottom until you find the model which has everything you need.
Yamaha is fine, as are Onkyo, Denon, Sherwood/Newcastle, and Pioneer. You may even want to look at Outlaw or Onkyo's preamp/processors instead and pick up an amp for your surround channels; that way you eliminate the internal amps entirely--but that'll probably blow your budget.

The waiting is difficult for sure. For me it makes it all the sweeter. At least you live in close proximity, mine had to travel to the Yukon. The wait was near unbearable lol.Its worth it though, and it keeps you goin to work.
Enjoy
