Its a lot like an old school dry French white: no fruity notes left This sounds like my common experience with US sauvignon blanc. Dry, high acidity, hardly any flavour, boring really. Viognier is usually more lively and is often used for blending because of its strong character. There is no notable acidity in this wine. It's funny. Back in the early '90s I got dirty looks and scowls from a cellar master in California because I complemented a wine of his for its fruit flavours. He told me, most snootily, that I would not like that other expensive Mr. fancypants Chardonnay.

I can point you to at least a dozen off the top of my head that are nothing like that. Sav Blanc is the big thing in Napa right now. Some are going for as much as $150 a bottle. Viogniers in the Paso area are fantastic.

Oh i don't doubt there are different styles of sauvignon blanc from California that are unlike what i've described. However of all those i tried from what i can buy locally, i haven't found much variation. It is not unlike the sauv blancs of New Zealand either. Virtually all of them i've had are heavy in a certain character which makes it easy to know exactly what you are drinking and where it is from. Unless i want that character specifically, i don't open a NZ sav blanc. A blanket statement, but it is what i've experienced.

I've bought a couple bottles South African wine recently for a steal and was very impressed. Costco had 2012 Excelsior cab for $6.99 around Christmas and I saw it at Wegman's for the same price.
It is the best <$10 wine I've had in recent memory.

While on a business trip to Montreal last week, I ate at the Sheraton Laval, 'cause I didn't feel like finding a restaurant at 8PM in -20C, snowy weather. So I'm looking at the menu and grilled chicken is $26, Rib eye is $37 and a 7oz filet was $31. No brainer as far as I was concerned... My last hotel steak was an over-cooked t-bone and wasn't wort the good wine that I got with it. So this time, I got a nice red ale while I waited for dinner to arrive. Well I was shocked with a 4-5 Star display of culinary expertise that melted in the mouth. The bar tender asked if I wanted another beer and I said no way, this was far too good for beer. So I picked THIS and the bartender said "Oh, the nice one!" and it was.

So close to downtown and you didn't sample Montreal's famous restaurant scene? Too bad.
I'm not surprised. Hotels in Montreal have to kick it up a notch or four to compete with the best restaurants in the country.

If the weather had been better I certainly would have ventured out. I was taken out to a very nice sushi dinner the second night - who knew salmon and foie gras would make for a good sushi combo? The sushi chef did, and it was fantastic.
The company I visited was surprised that I knew what poutine was. Thanks Tom, Peter, and JP!!
