Well after coming to this site for over a year i finally pulled the trigger on a pair of M50s. Over the last few weeks i have demoed paradigm moniter 9s, energy rc-30s, psb image t5s,totems,kefs, and many other. Im excited to try the axioms out they should be here next monday. Im really hoping they sound like the paradigms and psbs. It doesnt seem like the M50s are a popular choice around here. Why is that?

Congrats, deathjester!

I dunno. Mostly because we talk most people into getting M60s or M80s. If they fit your budget and you like them, I wouldn't sweat it. Let us know what you think when you get them!

I ordered a pair of M50s, took delivery and never opened the boxes for a trade up to the M60s ... I often wish I would have kept the 50s, or at least listened to the darn things.

Congrats!

Congrats on your new Axioms. I bet they will sound great, I recall NeverHappy (remember him) liked the M50s over the M80s.

I bought a good friend the M40s before they were discontinued. The M50s were the same, but larger.
The sound was more laid back, somewhat less detailed than the M60s/22/80s (i attribute that to the 2 way vs 3 way design without a dedicated midrange driver), but good bass and still a clear sounding tweeter.
They fit in a great price range especially on the used market or from the Factory Outlet IMO.

DJ, very good. You should enjoy the fine sounds with your M50s and you've probably overjoyed the members of the M50 Backers that they've got a prospective recruit.

There are still fans of the M50's left on the forum? I thought we managed to convert them all to M80 owners ;\)

DJ, I am looking forward to your impressions of the M50s, I hope you take the time to post them for us.

Any new speaker on its way to your door step is exciting IMO! Here I am sitting 15 feet from my almost 1 year old M80's and I'm wishing I could be at your house Monday when your M50's arrive! \:D

It's a great experience listening to a new set of speakers to see how well they fit into your listening area. Though it has a different design than their top-of-the-line models, the M50's are still made by Axiom, so I'm sure they are a fabulous speaker in their own right. So have fun demoing them, and if by chance they aren't what you were hoping for, you could always return them and perhaps try the M22's or M60's.

And if the are what you were hoping for, well then you will be a member of a very select group indeed! Either way, congrats!

Enjoy the M50's DJ.

The unfortunate truth is that the M50 is the "middle child" in Axiom's lineup. I believe most people are either looking for a bookshelf and start with the M22, or look for a pair of large towers and start with the M80. Looking at the M50 graph, rest assured, it's typically Axiom, enjoy them.

If I remember correctly, the old M40s basically sounded like the M3s but with added bass. Why am I thinking that's also the sound of the M50s?

If so, I've always wanted to try M3s and would love to try a floorstander that has the same acclaimed signature with deeper extension!

Never mind....

From the M50 page:
"If you're already a fan of Axiom's highly-rated M3 bookshelf speaker, you'll love this floorstanding version of the it [sic]. The M50 uses identical drivers to the M3 to replicate the award-winning sound in a tower speaker which adds more deep bass and greater peak dynamics to the playback."

From the response curve shown in the product page, the M50 looks a lot closer to M22s than M3s.

The main reason i picked the M50 was because people say they have a laid back sound to them. I really dont care for bright speakers. I guess every ones opinion on whats bright or not is different. Ive heard people say paradigm moniters were bright and i didnt feel that way. I find polks, kefs, totems, and klipisch very hard to listen to. I really wanted to try M60s since they really dont cost much more but was afraid they would sound like the above brands. Can any M50 or M3 owners here chime in give me an idea of what other brand they compare to.

I think I'm the last active member that has M50s, but my M50s are too old to really speak to what the current ones sound like. I suppose they are more laid back than the other Axioms I have (M22s, M80s, Audiobytes). I'm sorry to say that I prefer the other Axioms I have now. However, again, I haven't heard the current generation, and I've been told they're superior to the ones I have.

No Axiom is going to sound like a Klipsch, I don't think. I'm afraid I couldn't really compare the M50s to any other brand; audio memory is so poor...

I wouldn't put Kef, Polk and Totems(laid back, kind of) in the same category with any Klipsch(bright) I have heard. I would say the M3s sound closer to Totems but not really. I think the M3s sound better than most of those and I really don't care for the M3 sound, it's good but not for me.

I would suggest to try the M3s and if you don't like them the return shipping is cheaper, if you do like them, return them within the 30 days and only pay for the cost differential to order the M50s and be happy you found your floorstander you desire. \:\)

I was gonna order the m3s first for a try but figured id just go with the M50s. I agree the kefs and totems are nowhere near as bright as klipsch but they are when compared to energy and psb.

PSB has some pretty good speakers, I don't remember the ones I have heard and the Energy Connoisseur veritas line is quite good, close to M22/M60/M80 in SQ tone, IMO

I have a pair of m80s and they are way easier to listen to than klipsch... Klipsch is painful to hear for long periods IMO but m80s are just detailed and accurate

As for the first part of Ukiah's post, I agree. I think you'll like the 50s a great deal.

As for the second, well, I think it's modern first-world human nature to try to get other people to buy stuff that you have. It validates your own choices.

Deathjester, I'm not trying to move you up to the M60's or M80's, as I'm sure the M50's are probably a great speaker in their own right... but I will say that any and all legends that tell of M80's being 'bright' are simply unfounded. Unless you have an unusually unforgiving, harsh room in which to listen to them in, then I simply can't believe you would find them hard to listen to. My living room is far from ideal.... hard wood floors, pictures hanging all over the room, reflection spots everywhere, zero treatments to battle those reflection spots, etc... By all means my M80's should sound like absolute crap in this room. But this is far from the case, these speakers sound like heaven on earth.

And for most who actually do find M80's to be too 'bright' or detailed to their ear, the M60's have usually been the go-to speaker. They are the 'laid-back' version of the M80's. But like I said I'm not here to up-sell you. I hope you recieve your M50's in and enjoy every second of your listening experience with them. \:\)

If however you find yourself one day with another project with which to fill a speaker order, I would say don't be afraid to test drive some M80's. You will laugh you're ass off that you had been given the impression that they were a 'bright' speaker, I know I did. And for the money, you certainly can't go wrong with the M60's either.

Have a happy Monday! \:D

My dad still enjoys his M50s after four years. His speakers did seem a bit more laid back than my M60s, but this was listening in a different room with different equipment. I liked his speakers just fine. Keep an open mind.

Hi deathjester,

I think you'll really like the M50s--they do indeed have a "laid-back" sound, very close to the M3s but with much more deep bass extension and output.

The last time the M50s were put into a double-blind test that I did, I ranked them very well, and after the test was over, I was startled to learn I'd been listening to M50s and said,"Wow, are those M50s? I don't recall them sounding this good last time I heard them years ago."

Contrary to Micah's comment on the M40s, the M50s are NOT at all like the old M40s. When I joined Axiom and listened to the entire lineup and heard the M40s, I went "Yikes, what happened here??!!"

They were discontinued for a reason. By comparison to the rest of the Axiom models, the M40s were, um, er, dull, muffled.

Regards,
Alan

I find them bright and I don't find that unfounded at all given the number of instantaneous A/B tests i've done with other brands.

Utter nonsense.
Have you ever heard both in an instantaneous A/B setup and SPL matched and adjusted for the difference in ear-tweeter height given the difference in the two speakers' vertical footprint?
If not, you have little understanding of how close the M60 and M80 are in sound, aside from bass extension.
