Just curious, I was switching between Auddesy EQ on and off, and with the music I have been listening to, it's hard for me to really prefer it on or off at this point. How many of you really enjoyed the auto room setup EQs of your systems? I also noticed it set my woofer to -16 on my Marantz, and my level on the sub itself is about 10 o clock! I was kind of shocked there. (I turned it up a little, yes I love large amounts of bass ;))

I leave mine on too, but I have done OCD levels of tweaking (and use of Pioneer's Advanced mode) to see what is actually being measured, and make sure the adjustments have the least influence needed to get the best sound in my room.

What's Auddesy EQ? Just thought I'd round out the answers. ;\)

I don't use it at all.

I've tried the whole Audyssey thing. Ended up resetting the processor on the AVR. I have auto setup calibration and EQ not in use.

For Marantz (8001 and 8002), I did not like the MultEQ settings.

But when I got the Denon (which has MultEQ XT), I actually preferred it. So now it's on all the time.

Erik, keep in mind that, as I pointed out in the thread where you were buying a new receiver, the 8002 came out about three years ago and doesn't have some of the latest features. This includes the improved Audyssey MultEQ with Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume.

I keep MultEQ with the Dynamic EQ on at all times since there's at least a small benefit with all program sources that I've tried. About the only change I make is that I sometimes use the Audyssey curve with the slight high frequency roll-off and at other times the Flat curve without the roll-off, depending on the high frequencies present in the source material.

I have mine on, but I modified the settings a bit. (Not the EQ of course, but the speaker levels, and maybe a crossover or two.)

I couldn't get mine to make it sound anything but horribly flat. All the instruments blended together like a badly compressed MP3.
Not sure why, but I'm 100% satisfied without it so I stopped playing with it.

Im tending to think it gives an almost lifeless compressed sound to mine too, evident in some music Ive been listening to. I have it off for now, will mess with it in the future when Im bored.

Audyssey on for me.

I've found some of my music to sound lifeless as well... I hand't thought it might be the Audyssey. I'll try those discs agin with it off.

Side note, the best recording I've lisetened to on my system so far (I don't listen to much music on it) was Bobs and Lolo: Sea Notes. They are a childrens band and I put them on to keep the kids happy whle the wife napped... I was SHOCKED!

Like, dayum Bobs! Holy Crap Lolo! Nice work!

It's actually really easy to mess up the Audyssey calibrations. You really do have to follow the FAQ (available on AVS) to the letter! Also, as I mentioned, I don't bother with Audyssey unless it's XT. 2EQ and plain ol' MultEQ doesn't have enough filters to make me happy.

I have mine set to on for the most part but I do turn it off for some listening in pure stereo mode for that old school sound.

I suspect some of the differing answers between on and off might have to do with the rooms themselves and Audyssey could very well be sucking the life out of the sound while trying to tame some bad nulls/highs in the respective rooms. If this is the case then leaving this feature off would make for a better sounding system.

I suspected this is my case. It's only been tried in my original 'Mark sized' room... square. Also 1 concrete half wall with a hard surface floor over concrete. It probably toned it into nothingness.

I don't know if you're interested in EQ in general, or specifically Audyssey,... but I use Trinnov EQ and I love it.

Fred, after about 17 years of development, Sherwood Newcastle finally released the R-972 with Trinnov for general sale some months ago. Both Sound&Vision and HomeTheater Magazine published generally favorable reviews and lab tests a couple months ago.

As the tests show, as far as basic amplification goes the R-972 is a standard unit many examples of which are available for less than half the price. The difference of course is Trinnov and further study is needed to determine if the room EQ is as good or better than Audyssey MultEQ, and if the remapping feature to compensate for poor speaker placement is effective(assuming that it's needed in a particular setup).

Thanks for the links John. It looks like Trinov delivers the goods. Given all the talk over Multi-EQ I'm surprised this receiver has not come up as a topic before.

Good morning,
This is my first post and I was wondering, for those of you who do use Audyssey, what crossovers does Audyssey pick?
I am researching and I am looking at the M80's and the VP 180.
Thank you for your input

It picks the crossovers based on the readings it gets from the speakers while testing during setup. For example my M80s get a 40hz crossover while my M22s get 80hz for their crossover when used as my mains all in the same room and placement.

Thank you!
I am currently using MultiEQ XT and an AS EQ 1, and it seems that Audyssey sets a crossover about 10-20hz over a speakers spec'd lower range with the setups I've tried. Your results seem to confirm this.
Thank you again, this is exactly the type of information I'm looking for :-)

Prblm, welcome. For example, Audyssey measured that my M22s in my room setup were capable of strong output to below 60Hz, and using the receiver manufacturer's standard, the crossover was set at 60Hz. Nevertheless, since I wanted my EP500 to handle more of the low bass load and my M22s less, I manually reset the crossover to 80Hz. Resetting the crossover higher(but not lower) is okay since Audyssey would equalize theoretically as far down as the original setting and no equalization is lost if a higher setting is actually in effect.

My Pioneer MCACC eq is always on the setting that (supposedly) optimizes frequency response. However, I tune to ear the volumes and crossover settings of my 3 subwoofers, turning them down until I stop hearing low frequency booms.

The Pioneer 1020 should have half-way decent standing wave attenuation.

If you're in the mood to tweak try this:

Get the receiver to produce the pink noise on the sub-woofer channel. Use an SPL meter very near to each sub (like less than 1 foot away from the cone), so the influence of the others is minimal, set them all to the same output level. Now run the multi-point standing wave analysis selecting three points in the listening area (they'll be in the order of 2nd, 3rd, and then primary). Check the that receiver's sub output level is 0 or slightly positive (if it reads negative go back to the first step, and adjust each sub to a lower level).

That should get you even output, and the receiver will be killing 3 of the boomy frequencies (usually standing waves created by the length, width, and height of the room).

Thanks for the suggestion on how to use standing wave filtering with multiple subs, Chris.
