Where would a set of the QS8's be more benificial in a 7.1 set up? The right and left side surrounds or the right and left rears? I am thinking the sides but would like some input.

Thanks
Phil

I have the paradigm AMS-150R-SM in there now and was thinking of replacing them. I like the inwall look but I think they are lackign to the QS8's in ability. They do put out and sound very good forand inwall thought.

I use QS4's on the side of my 7.1 system, and the effect is theatrical. Sound is everywhere but never directional. It changed my whole 5.1 system of sound from the back on/off to 7.1 sound engulfing the whole room.

QS's are meant for side surround application and can be used for the rear channel as well.

Nah, just that after the first few responses PhilipD probably decided to go with sides and stopped looking at the thread wink

just today, i ordered a pair of QS4's (i should have them next week) for my small basement office secondary HT setup, they will be used as side surrounds!

for my larger main HT room, I use QS8's for side surrounds. In the main Ht room I use Direct Radiating speakers for my 2 surround back channels to round out my 7.1 system!

I'm currently running a 5.1 setup with M60's for the front's with a VP150 for the center. I've also got a pair of QS8's on the sides. I've been thinking of adding a pair of M3 bookshelves to drive my back channels when I step up to 7.1

So my question is how do you like that setup? Do you feel that it really balances it out? Or do you think using QS4's might be a better way to go. Maybe we could start a poll: M3's vs. QS4's for the rear channels?

Well my setup is very much like yours (M60, VP150), but you have more speaker on the sides, 8's vs my 4's. My rears are NHT's from 1990! One inch tweeters and 4.5 mid's have been carrying the load and continue to do so.

The biggest difference occurred when I moved to a 7.1 and put the QS4's into the mix. I lost the directionality to rear sounds and the sound became so much more natural. I'm sure you are already hearing this with your QS8's on the side.

With that in mind, I think it is a no brainer to round out the 7.1 with QS4's. Why add directionality?

M2s would be a better match to your setup than M3s and should work fine if you're a few ft away from them. Personally I would go with the QS.

It depends on how much room you have behind for the rear channels. If there is a significant amount of room for diffusion to take place(min~6ft) then M2s could be used, M2s because they are a better tonal match for the rest of the speakers. If you have less room then I would suggest using the QS series again the nod goes to the QS8s for the same driver compliment thus same timbre match.

I'll probably try in-ceiling speakers for the 2 rears (if I ever get my HT room done), because there will only be about 3 feet behind with no wall to mount to (because of other stuff there).

But it would be in the way of the entry door one one side and could work on the other side.

That would be some serious sound. The problem is, I would have to remember to leave the remote on the floor. Then I could just jump on the buttons.

Thanks for all the input everyone! I must say that I love my QS8's and would consider getting another set for the rear. But the M2's that jakewash is talking about might be a better choice. Let me describe my listening room to give everyone a better idea of my thought process:

It's 17'L x 14'W with vaulted ceilings. My listening position is 10' away from the rear of the room. When I add the 2 rear channels, they will have to be mounted on the wall approximately 8' up with a 30 degree down angle. My concern is that there will be too much dispersion of sound and that more of a direct firing speaker would be needed.

So, does that change anyone's opinion?

Thanks again for all the help. You guys have been great!

Quickflat(wide receiver or quarterback?)welcome. For surround sound it isn't really a concern to have "too much" dispersion. My view would be that with the amount of room you have behind your listening position the dispersion of the M2s would be adequate and they'd work well, but the greater dispersion of a QS4 or QS8 wouldn't be a disadvantage.

Okay; having done some volunteer football coaching at the high school level in a previous life, I suspected that might refer to a pass route where the inside receiver shoots directly out into the flat toward the sideline.

Whichever way you go with the back surround setup, you'll get added enjoyment even from 2-channel source material, since a mode such as DPLIIx can effectively extract the surround ambience from the front channels and direct it to the sides and rear where it belongs.

my QS4's have shipped! they are gonna work wonders in my small secondary basement office HT setup! I should have them by the last half of the week and will set them up this weekend as long as they are ok from the shipping! I picked up a pair of the steel ceiling mounting brackets as well!

i received the QS4's and the ceiling mounting brackets today; everything was in good shape with no damage! I'll install the hardware and connect them during the weekend and give you some feedback. I expect it to be much like the QS8's i have in my main HT room, the 4's will make a perfect addition for my small secondary system in the basement office. of this i have no doubt!

Looks like I will be removign the paradigms and replacing them with the QS8's when they get here. It will be some time I am having the shipping delayed but will post pics and thoughts when I get them.

Later
