One last point. Most peoples hearing is not perfect. So the sound you get with a meter may not be ballanced to your ears.



This is an interesting point.
Obviously if someone were partly deaf in one ear, they may prefer to have the right/left surround speaker turned up more. However most ppl do not have such specific circumstances. Using the meter simply removes the bias from a single persons' ear such that anyone sitting down to listen would hear an all around equal sound level.
