Which set ?
there will be dual subs?

trying to decide actually I have B&W 863's now ....... they will be leaving.

But, for movies if floorstanding is better, then which is best for movies ?

I want black for the movie room and Real Cherry veneer, unless the Vinyl is great. Pretty sure the M80's are going upstairs but, not sure what I need for the movie room M60 or M80.

If I look at the Freq. Graphs there is not much difference, except for the extra 10 hrz in the bottom end. Of which the sub will over ride that area anyways.

Actually if I am reading it correctly the M60 look a bit better, flatter than the M80

I have M60's + Dual EP-600's... Anyone would be hard pressed to convince me an M80 based system would be "better" than mine.... equal, sure......

I have my 600's crossed over at around 100hz i think.

P.S. dual 600's makes for some Freaking Awesome news~~~...

I have a single EP600, a pair of M60s and a Pair of M80s ... I personally prefer the M80s in my environment.

History will tell you that the M60 owners are going to say the M60s are the best while the M80 owners will state the M80s are the best.

I would say M60's + EP-600's would be equal to M80's+ EP-600's..

However without a sub, M80's would be better due to having more drivers.

I would say there is a very subtle difference between the M60 and M80 for movies; during my A/B testing I prefered the M80 due to the cleaner/forward sounding midrange, better vocals etc. THIS WAS ALL WITH V2'S SO ymmv.

For music, M80s are really nice, although it has been a few years since I heard (SirQuack's) M80s. Without a sub, the lower end extension of the M80s is really nice.

However, I am super happy with my M60s with sub. I do plan on a second sub, but not because I am unhappy with my current setup, but because I want to incrementally improve my overall LFE experience in my theater.

I say go with what fits in your budget and never look back. The M80's are a "better" speaker by themselves, but many people would argue that the M60 fronts with a good sub (thus the low end being cross-overed out of the equation) and you would be hard pressed to hear a difference for movies.

Alex, just to note that the slightly better bass extension of the M80 vs M60 without a sub wouldn't be due to the M80 having more bass drivers: they each have the same two 6 1/2 inchers. The bigger M80 enclosure allows for tuning it to a slightly lower frequency, but yes, this wouldn't be significant with subs handling that area.

As Jason suggested in his preceding reply, a possible M80 advantage would be a cleaner mid-range, because there the M80(along with the M22)does have the advantage of two vs one of the same driver.

Like, totally ditto.

The Budget will allow for M80's. But, don't really want to spend the extra $400+ if it is really un-neccessary .I know that word is spelled wrong.
When I look at the graphs though, my point is along the Mid-range and highs both the 60's and 80's look very well the same. The only difference being that the 80's play louder in the ranges.

hmmm

what I should do is wait ..... get the m80's for my stereo ..... then order the M60s' do a side by side. and if there is no difference then I am good. If there is then I got to ship back and get the 80's. I will only lose $100 return shipping.
if of course I go the floorstanding route for HT.

I have two sets of M60s. No regrets at all. One room is small enough that floor standers were probably overkill, but I stayed with them purely for psychological reasons.

are you going to be doing a side by side with or with out a sub? If you are doing side by side comparison without a sub there WILL be a difference, if you are doing it with a sub, then i would bet there will not be a difference..

If you are doing it with a sub, i would be interested to hear what you think.

I moved from M80's to M60's in my HT. At first I really couldn't tell much difference, if any. Lately I have been plagued with a feeling, or possibly a notion of sorts that something is now missing. I'm not sure what it is, but the word "punch" comes to mind when I try to visualize it. I am not sure if it is that the 80's were Ti models and the 60's are V3's, or if it's more of a speaker model thing. I got a similar impression when I moved from a dual M22 and VP150 center arrangement to a single VP160. I thought it might just be Audyssey playing tricks on me, but this feeling of missing something remains when I turn Audyssey off as well.

From my side-by-each comparison day at Axiom I, like Jason, will say there is a slight advantage to the M80s in the mid range and trebble. It is subtle by noticeable.

I think your direct comparison is a good idea.

Furniture would be in my equation. If you are going to use stands, the I would just get the floor standers. If you were going to put bookshelf speakers on furniture or wall mounted then I would consider them.

It will be with subs, as it is when watchin movies that I am not sure. I don't need to compare for music and the M80's is what I know I want for that system.
