Anyone know if infrared remotes work through plexiglass? I know they work through regular glass, but that's not an option, since 1-yr-olds and plates of glass aren't a great combo (unless you're Ron Popiel/Dan Akroyd).
I am trying to block the 1-yr-old from constantly cranking up the receiver volume (ironic since his sister always wants to turn it down). Our best bet short of a major furniture reconfiguration appears to be creating a plexiglass door over the front of the AV equipment rack slot where the receiver is (while allowing full ventilation through the back). I assume I can get plexiglass cut at Home Depot. Appreciate any suggestions.

AB, plexiglass is transparent to infra-red wavelengths.

Good thought, but if I put the reciver up top on my equipment rack, which is next to the ent. armoir, then when the door from the armoire is open, it blocks the receiver. (My CD player is the only component up that high, which is not an issue, since the armoire is closed when we listen to music.)
I got the plexiglass at Home Depot yesterday and had a hinged door up within an hour of getting back home. So far two magnet catches appear strong enough to stop little Max from opening the thing.
He did look a lot like a professional mime the first time he touched the plexiglass -- frantically feeling the invisible wall between him and the wonderful volume knob.

How long, do you figure, before little Max figures the whole thing out, and you are, once again, listening at reference level?

Hmm... a more humane way of addressing the situation than the "Q-tip loaded in an air gun" idea I had.

We might be safe for awhile (famous last words). Our 4-yr-old can barely pry open the door, because the magnets are pretty strong. And she has been old enough to know not to screw with the thing since she was about 2 and a half. Now, the boy's quite a bit stronger and more active .... Makes me fear for them M60s.

AB, another way to look at the byplay between your son and daughter over the receiver volume is that it's good training for their role in things to come. Maybe 30 years from now he'll be cranking up the volume while his wife yells "turn that thing down", and the converse for your daughter.

I'm afraid you're right, JohnK. Too bad. I don't care one way or the other if my daughter grows up to be a feminist (hopefully the whole concept will be obsolete by the time she's entering the working world), but I want her to be strong, and to like her music loud.
