The town that I grew up in had one stoplight and one doctor. He was Chinese and his last name was Hu. No lie.
"I'm going to see Doctor Hu." Who? "Yes." No. Doctor Who? "Yes."

I would agree that Breaking Bad takes the cake for compelling TV, with a steady escalation of jaw-dropping moments. I don't remember the last time I was this wrapped up in a story.
I would say Sopranos was the last show that I found a story really compelling. However, Sopranos had a lot of filler in terms of story plots and character development. The creators dragged the show on about two seasons too long to cash in on its popularity. Breaking Bad is the opposite. There is a purpose for everything. Like you mentioned there is an escalation from season to season that never lets up.

I watched the first couple episode of Breaking Bad. Figured I better stop or I'd get hooked and I was already four seasons behind... The Walking Dead is a pretty creative story, if you forget about zombies. I hate zombie shows, but do get into the 'post apocalyptic' type stories. Revolution for example. Bad writing, but the same plot.
So did anyone catch the new show, Da Vinci's Demons? That might just be one to watch. Clever story. I watched it and will more than likely continue to watch it.
