Any recommendations on a free standing, five burner gas range?
Tks, Adrian

Oh, FIVE burners. Mister Fancy.
30" or 36"?
How about a Viking or DCS?
Mike will be along shortly to recommend something you've never heard of, can't afford, but want desperately.

30"....Viking ranges are beautiful Tom, but they're a little pricey. We're looking at $3000.00 or less, approx....the GE Cafe line looks pretty nice so far.

We got a GE Profile dual-fuel range (with only four measly burners) years ago, and that thing has been just great. Electric convection oven and gas cooktop. It's not exactly commercial-quality convection, though.
How about restaurant surplus?

Tom, do you prefer the dual fuel option vs all gas in hindsight?

Adrian, why even talk to him, that four-burner peon!

Tom, do you prefer the dual fuel option vs all gas in hindsight? We have the Kitchen Aid 6 burner dual fuel (propane top / convection electric with steam assist oven) and love it. Right now electric is cheaper than gas so it works for us. The window holding the digital display didn't hold up to the cleaning we do and I had to epoxy the window and display mechanism into the SS cover frame after five years of hard use - but other than that it's been a work horse.

We have an all gas Whirlpool Gold that came with the current house. (About a year and a half old) We love the gas cooktop, but hate the gas oven. It's amazing how much control you gain with the burners, and how much you lose with the oven. I should actually throw a thermometer in to see how much of a temperature swing it has. If we were to buy one, it would definitely be a dual fuel.

I like the electric oven. It is dryer and more precise than gas. I don't know how you could do meringues in a gas oven. Also, I just don't have confidence in gas fueled top broilers. We're not bakers, so the allure of adjusting the humidity is limited for us. Even if we did want that, I've heard that humid ovens tend to deteriorate more quickly. Sounds like Scott has more experience with that concept than I do.
I kind of like "four burner peon" though.

We do ALOT of cooking and actually considered an 8 burner or two, 4 burner (peon ) stoves next to each other - which would have been significantly cheaper. We've only used the steam thing once. We've also found that meringues in this climate are tough as the average humidity is over 80%.

We have Tom's GE Profile dual fuel stove as well. Mostly because Tom is my hero. It's 7 years old now and continues to work perfectly. I would highly recommend the GE line although I can't speak to newer models. Unless something drastic changed, I would suspect they are still an excellent choice in thier price range.
I'll never be without gas top burners again. It's just sooo much better to have instant temperature adjustment. Like Tom, the gas oven portion just didn't appeal to us. We are very happy with the hybrid version and the GE is proving to be a good choice long term.
Another plus of the gas burners is being able to flame roast chili peppers!!!!
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

I had no idea that hybrid ovens existed.
Someday I'll have a gas range again, but not for a long time. No desire to spend more money on appliances this year, thank you Mr. Water Heater.

I really appreciate the input from you guys! it looks like the dual fuel idea may be the way to go. There doesn't seem to be too many choices once you start narrowing down what you want...in our case, we don't want that traditional look where the control panel sticks up over the back but instead have the controls integrated into the front for a nice flat cook-top. This, combined with 5-6 burners, dual fuel in a 30" package limits our choices. Andrew, we looked at the GE Profile as well as the GE Cafe, both are similar but look slightly different. Where the Cafe looks more "industrial", the profile has a more modern look to it. That's good to know you've had no reliability issues with it which is probably our most important criteria. Some people have complained about very loud fan noise on the GE's, others say they're quiet.... Tom, thank you for your input( we're looking at some Vikings too) and I really appreciate your input Shawn, you're kind of the resident gas guy on the forums here.

Shawn, you're kind of the resident gas guy on the forums here. I lost that honor when I reduced the fiber in my diet. Have I been helpful yet?

Well, there you go. Too bad the Wolf only has 4 burners.
Thanks for the validation, Murph. I'm simply aglow.
Ken, I don't know if the OVEN is hybrid; what I've seen are ranges that have NG cooktops and 220V ovens.
Adrian, I don't find the sound of the GE convection fan objectionable.
When we briefly tried to cook on an electric range, the results were poor and the process was torment.

Adrian, Consumer Reports tested electric, gas and dual-fuel ranges in the December issue. The GE Profile PHB925SPSS($1500)was the top-rated gas model with the Frigidaire Gallery FGGF3032MW($800)not far behind and receiving the "Best Buy" designation. The dual-fuel KitchenAid KDRS505XSS($2200)was rated only slightly lower, but their owner survey indicated that KitchenAid was significantly more repair-prone.
They also commented under "More burners, same space" about maneuvering problems in using five burners simultaneously.

So we provide knowledge based on our experiences as consumers. JohnK quotes from a digest based on experiences from consumers. Ours was appreciated but his was excellent.... I'm just sayin........

I just enjoy stirring pots. Especially over gas. And five of them at a time, as long as they don't bump into each other.

Especially over gas. And five of them at a time, as long as they don't bump into each other. I use my special pentaspoon for that. Five long spoons, one handle.

Great. So you already have one.
I'll return the one I bought for your birthday and buy you underwear instead.
I don't supposed that you have that too?

Very good, Adrian.
Just in case a previous comment indicates that there's some misunderstanding, the CR ratings are based on their actual lab tests, not owner reports. What is based on owner surveys is the long-term repair records of various brands.

Anyone have an idea how much it should cost to run approx 50ft of gas line from the supply to the stove? it's pretty straight forward(unfinished basement).
