Gessus , are they going to start this shit again. Seriously, its hd dvd and blu ray all over again. I was under the understanding that h265 was going to be/all ready is the defacto standard. Google should stick to what it does best, spying for big corporations.

Blu-ray allows for three different video codecs (MPEG2, VC-1, and AVC), there's no reason what ever UHD disc format is settled upon can't include both VP9 and HEVC, nor why streaming services can't pick between them. Which ever one is easier to use, with less cost, will win out in the end.
If you use Chrome or Firefox and visit YouTube you will eventually be getting VP9 video. So that's millions and millions of streams right there depending on it.

All of these new codecs are incompatible with pretty much every piece of electronics in most peoples homes. Is this the march of technology or the march of my money leaving my wallet. They need these codecs for streaming which in the end will spell the end of blu ray. I suspect this had a lot to do with MS not including Windows Media Center on the Xbox 1. I have never seen a 4K tv but I doubt very much I need one but soon that is all there will be cause that's what will be rammed down our throats. That was the death knell of Plasma. End of Rant

I thought 265 is targeted at bringing in the age of UHD via streaming. I doubt we'll see another form of hard media to replace BDs. Hell DVD hasn't gone away.

I think a new disc format would be a real hard sell. I don't want to have to replace my perfectly good Oppo . Manufacturers would have to get new authoring equipment etc. Like you say, dvd hasn,t been killed off because people wont upgrade to bd. Streaming has already killed off every video store except one in my city which has 30,00 people. I wont be buying any 4k TV's for the foreseeable future. What I have is more than adequate. 3D was suppose to be the big thing and that fell on its face again, I don't think 4k will go anywhere much either. S Streaming pisses me off. I pay 125 a month for 150gb, I cant stream many movies with that. I tried Netflix and I was left with next to nothing for internet use. Bluray all day long baby.

H.265 can be used the same way. It supports bit-rates that are impractical for streaming. I think we will see a physical UHD format. It may be backward compatible with BD players. Though, 3D was supposed to be that way, but most (all? I haven't bought any movies that were released in 3D fora while) 3D releases include a 2D disc instead combo that uses the 3D extension. My goal is to have a 4k projector with a laser light source in the next couple of years. My phone has a 5" screen, and is 1080p. More pixels are better.
