I'm a "student," but work in a ski shop, work as a raft guide in the summer, and am a tech support dude at school.

My job title is "Field Engineer" In other words, I'm a tech jack-of-all-trades. I do software/hardware maintenance and repair, system build/install/configure, network build/install/configure, server build/install/configure, backup see above, migration planning, hw/sw recommendations, you name it. Oh yeah, and my focus is on Macs. Which severely limits my job opportunities! :-(

Retired, but sole caregiver for my 91 year old mother. Toughest job I've ever had.

Was a full time musician/performer all my life, with a 5 year detour as a disc jockey (radio, not parties) at WNCR in Cleveland, OH. and WHCN in Hartford, CT.

Ajax, I'm in the same boat, my wife has health problems and I'm also looking after my 81 year old mother.

You are so correct about it being a tough job. If you ever want to talk about it just drop me a pm.

cheers

i work for VERIZON as an ordering analyst in the DSL dept. basically, 75% of all DSL srvc orders placed by customers(wholesale and retail), are processed and installed by the system. now around 25% of those orders error for whatever reason. we go into these orders, trouble shoot the prob, correct the error, and formulate solutions to prevent the error from occuring again.....................i can feel the envy??

HA- trust me, its rather boring.. but, it supports my family, and its in an air conditioned building.. which trust me, july in TEXAS, that is a good thing..

my wife teaches anatomy/physiology at the local junior college. they are disceting cats this week, so she smells kinda funny every afternoon when she gets home.

IT/Systems Engineer for EDS at the GM Shreveport Assembly Plant. The team I'm on runs the paint shop systems so that all the Colorados/Canyons get painted. Also, yes I love my job.

WOW...there's a lot of "tech jobs" people around here. Guess that's why we can afford all our Axiom gear. *wink*

I sell semiconductors for the Western US, specializing in CPU controllers (yeah, like northbridge/southbridge) and serial ATA (hard disk) controllers. Not thrilling, but it pays the bills and business is picking up.

I'm in I.T. and my official title (which is very inaccurate) is "Network Engineer." My job responsibilities are similar to Ken's (kcarlile) in that I'm a tech-jack-of-all-trades, but I don't do nearly as much driving as he does.

I've got my hands in everything: routing/switching, telephony, disaster recovery, network backups, windows patch management (ick!), remote administration, desktop and server computer configuration/deployment, web development, light programming, Windows/Mac/*NIX, etc...

I do get to travel a few times a year to work in major cities around the country. I've been to our offices in Seattle, San Francisco, Berkeley (where I work), Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Houston, St. Louis, Chicago, Ann Arbor, Boston, New Haven, New York, and ummm.. I think that's it.

Oh, and here's a couple "views" I have from my desk:

I work in digital post production for IMAX. I work in sunny Santa Monica, CA.

Currently prepping for the new Harry Potter movie. Next in the queue for the IMAX treatment will be Catwoman. I'm going to be a very busy guy for the next several months!

I work for a Mississippi based residential furniture manufacturer, and we also make home theater seating. I'm not sure that I should use the company name on this forum, but it is a name brand...pm me if you would like more info.

I'm a grain merchant @ a grain elevator (no not the job where I ask you what floor ). The job entails a lot of phone communication with producers assisting them with grain marketing/sales. I look after setting grain prices at our facility, so playing with the commodity markets and f/x market is involved. I'm also in charge of logistics, which is basically making sure the grain I buy into the elevator gets shipped out quickly (by railcar or truck). It seems pretty boring considering some of the other jobs you people have.

I'll have to snap some pictures from the top of the elevator when things green up this spring. The view is really fantastic from 100+ feet in the air.

Its always very interesting to see where the people you talk with on here everyday spend their day.

Lots of geeks around here as well. Hopefully when I get out of school I will be working in Sunnyvale, CA for a little company getting ready to go public who has one of the biggest Linux clusters in the world at their disposal. When I was there over spring break, I was simply blown away. Only downside is they don't regularly hire new college grads. Maybe I can sneak in there somehow. If not I can always work for Cisco or IBM or BofA. I interned at Cisco last summer setting up test networks and showing off what their products can do to the big nerds of big companies. This summer I'm working with BofA doing other nerdy stuff. Should be great FUN!!

Research scientist (primarily sub-Arctic ecotoxicology with environmental contaminants like mercury, pesticides, petroleum, mixed in with experimental design, field sampling, analytical chemistry, statistical analyses, journal paper publication, that sort of thing).

Such is the oh so exciting life of science.
I spend way too much time researching the wrong things. The quest for audio knowledge is killing my days.
I blame Ian.

Where to begin... my current employment state shadows two of my life beliefs

1) Never turn down a job twice
2) Those with little willpower should keep busy at all times, lest they be tempted by the fun thin... er, evils of the world

-My day job, I own a design and development company (print layout, broadcast and industrial video graphics and animation)
-When not doing that, I run a live event video production crew (mainly concerts and sporting events)
-When needed, I work as a lighting tech for my bro's documentary crew (which I came by in a strange way, offered to cover for a grip one day and turned out I've got an eye for lighting)
-I've also been offered the audio engineer gig at the arena, still not sure whether or not I'll take it

Other jobs (reverse chronological order):
-Shipper/receiver for an importer/exporter - "10 gross of maxipads to Tisdale, Saskachewan? I'm on it!"
-Various construction related jobs (drywall delivery, insulator)
-Licensed airsmith/Paintball referee
-Hospitality industry (ie: the guy spitting in your onion rings)

I applaude both of you in your endeavors as caregivers

I, hopefully, won't have to be a caregiver for some time yet as both my parents are still very healthy as are my wife's.

I appear to be the only one that actually gets dirty on a daily basis. I am a Mechanic and work for a large courier company up here in the great white north. Started on a career in Computers at university but decided I liked to play with cars more.

I am an Industrial Engineer (BS from Rutgers) working in the medical device industry. I basically now am a Project Manager, installing new systems, mfg equipment, new packaging for the products. When I am not doing project work, I develop computer simulation models of the company's manufacturing processes.

Sorry if this sounds like a resume, but my position has been eliminated after 19 years (as of 4/30/04). The people at our career center keep telling me to network! So why not with members of my "Axiom family".

Same here. 13 years with the company and have saved them in excess of $1 million in the past 6 years be bringing projects in under budget, on time, and on quality. A couple of weeks ago my services were no longer required. Go figure. I too was told to network however, I like to peruse the Axiom boards for pleasure - have to keep work and pleasure separate.

i run a small appliance and hvac parts store. one would compare it to an auto parts store, only for appliances and hvac equipment. got into this after teaching 6th grade for 10 years. if you guys need any replacement parts, let me know. if you are considering new appliances, again, let me know and i'll advise what brand not to buy.

I forgot to say what I do in my post above. I am a 5th year Senior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Central California. I am an Architectural Engineering Major and I am doing an internship in London for a Structural Engineering Company this summer. Yes I will be here for a 6th year.

Don't make fun, all of you graduates would probably be in college for 6 years too if you had Axioms while in college.

TweedleyD,

Your Transpotation Specialist description reminds me of a friend from high school. He told me his dad was a Hydraulic Engineer and I though that was pretty cool. Then he came clean and told me his dad drove a forklift in a warehouse.

Nothing wrong with being a professional student (re: snippy) Took me 7 years to get out of Poly. I had to "find" myself. Time spent at the Library, Mother's, & Frog & Peach didn't help matters either.

All grown up now and a "jack of all trades" graphic designer - websites, CD-ROMs, Print Ads - It pays for the Axioms and eternal upgrades...

Yeah, extra time is OK at school - makes you smarter. I switched majors and it cost me a summer and extra semester of school. However, while I was doing the extra time there, I was NOT doing any graduate work at the University of Vietnam. U of V was not very selective, they pretty much accepted incoming classes of thousands every month.

Interesting post topic.

Architect-in-training for a well-known southern firm, starting to dabble in Graphic Design, ideally would like to be in an integrated design practice-industrial, graphics, architectural, interior, etc.
Graduated from my steadfast altec lansing pc speakers to hi-fi when I sold them right after architectural school in Western Australia, moved to the States and bumped my comp out of my room!

I am an officer in the Army, originally from CA, so I appreciated the CA view pictures. I recently returned from being a resident of Baghdad. Glad I was able to leave when I did, looks like it is taking a turn for the worse.

Funny thing is, the day the 30 day trial period ended for my speakers was the day I was notified I would no longer have a job. In many ways, the HT setup I now have has really helped me. Nothing like firing up some tunes and sipping a well poured black and tan!

About networking, the stories I have heard about how people get jobs is amazing. You just never know!!!

Interesting - what part of WA did you go to school in - Perth? I spent a couple of weeks in Perth and in the Pilbara in 2000. I still correspond with a couple of friends there - beautiful country.

Chadmat - welcome and thank you. No need to get into the politics, but you put your life on the line and that deserves some kudos. I don't know if you have the Axioms or are considering a purchase, but if you have/get them, enjoy!!!

Ray3,

So far I have the VP150 and the QS8s in the rear, still have NHT2.5is in the front that I am pretty happy with. I have been impressed with the Axioms thus far and plan on adding the M80s to my setup in the future when the budget allows.

The only hard choice left in the system after the M80s will be HSU, SVS, or an Adire sub. But what a nice dilemmna to have!

This will come together nicely. What size room are you working with and waht does it open into relative to adjacent space? What receiver are you using? Do you have a big screen TV? Do you now or have you ever used..... - OH WAIT, different checklist.

Give us something to work with, otherwise we'll not be able to properly abuse you!!! Pete is is lurking out there somewhere waiting to pounce.

Ray,

My current setup is :
NAD T762 recevier
Pioneer DV-563
Venhaus Digital Interconnect
Kimber 8PR Kable (not trying to start wire debate, fried game me this for generic 12AWG prices, but I do like it a lot:)
NHT 2.5I Mains
VP150 Center
QS8 Rears
27 Inch TV

I can't give specifics on my room as I will be house hunting in Indianapolis this week-end. Once I returned from my exotic overseas trip, it was time to move again. Hope to find a place with a good size room for the home theater. Ultimate room size should be around 14x12 for most of the houses I have seen on the internet. That Adire Rava sub looks to be pretty sweet, by chance do you have any information on the Rava versus the SVS and HSU offerings,

Chad

For a 14x12 room, I'd consider the M60s over the M80s. The m80s are a bit picky about placement and you couldn't really sit far enough away from them to enjoy their full sound.

My living room is 12x13 and between the couch, coffee table, and cabinet I have my TV and components in, I wouldn't know where to put big speakers.

I'd probably stick with M22 unless you only want to look at towers. My room is 12x18 and the 22's fill it without a problem. M60's might be a little big for that room, although I'm sure you could get them to work.

I'll bet you enjoy the T762. I've heard nothing but good things about it. Nothing from personal experience on the Rava. I have seen quite a few discussions at the AVS Forum (you might check over there) that indicate this is sub a lot of people like. In a 14x12 room, you won't need a monster sub and the HSU STF-2 might be a pretty good choice to get you started. Good quality, good performance, good price.

BTW, based on the room size, the pointer to the M60s or M22s is good advice. SInce you will likely move to larger digs as time goes on, I'd nudge you to the 60s.

For your own piece of mind, give Axiom a call to discuss and you might find that you can save a few $$ to put towards a sub.

Been working as a maintenance tech. at a childrens hospital for about 10 years in all the cool areas....operating rooms-recovery-day surgery.- and get to chat with lot's of friendly Nurses and Dr's.
Spending time online while trying to recover from 2nd back surgery...Time's running out for my opportunity to return...11 months off waiting for pain to go away.
Of course the good side to this is the stereo/home theatre hobby has kicked in big time.

I'm a Senior Manager/Director with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Been with them for over 8 years; thus, I've lasted in Public Accounting longer than most--except for the Partners.

I work mostly with larger public clients overseeing audits of Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (Sarbanes-Oxley act). I also manage multiple teams of IT auditors, who are assisting the financial and Controls audit, thus I have a strong background in accounting and IT.

They'll have to offer much more money than I was makeing when they laid me off. Even then, I'm not sure I'll take it.
Something about working for a comapany that has laid me off.
I'm glad to work freelance for them. They pay me 3x more than when I worked for them full time.

I know insurance is high for a large co., but I doubt its that much higher.

High School Science teacher in Montana. In the summer I am a campground host in Glacier Park, 35 miles from the nearest electricity. From axioms to real peace and quiet, what a difference. I don't think that any music playing on any speaker system can sound as nice as loons calling in the early morning.(Bears growling at night are a different story). Camping, hiking and kayaking all summer, nothing better than that.
