Thanks, Charles. I'm just copying others' work for now. Except for a few like this one that came out of nowhere.

Lol. I always thought the ability to draw was nature over nurture. It's actually all nurture and like other art, can be taught.

Loose, 2 minute sketch using my Namiki Vanishing Point fountain pen dressed in Carbonesque Blue and filled with Schaeffer premium jet black ink. Inspiration provided by the playlist below.

Nice work, I'm impressed Mojo!
Also, I didn't know being artistic would give me an excuse to buy cool ink pens, so now I'm interested. No talent, but interested.

... "Draw a bath." Ha! Two shows a night TrevorM?

Since Cork is interested in the hardware, the sketch above was produced with the tools shown below. That fat pencil is a 5.6 mm dream! It is magic; almost draws on its own. The 0.9 mm pencil was used for only two marks. I'll let you guess which ones. The other two cylinders are round and square refillable erasers.

[quote=Rebulx]Are those originals Mojo?/quote]

I'd say 25% of my stuff is original. And by that I mean working from photos I've taken like the one of one of my buddies below. Working directly from the natural source requires a ton of observational skill and knowledge I can't yet put into practice. If I want to buy more speakers, I have to hang on to my day job. smile

I find my Lamy Safari and Pilot Namiki Vanishing Point are all I need for fountain pens. I mostly use a 10 cent Papermate InkJoy for ballpoint work. I have various felts...the Pigma being my favorite. I carry the kit below when I'm out and about in an old but very appropriate eyeglass case.

Rich, I haven't taken any classes. I've taken books out from the library and those have been somewhat helpful. My buddy of 43 years (shown above), who has been into art since elementary, has really helped me. Watching how he works and moves is particularly enlightening.

It looks like you're doing beautiful work with basic tools (no offense if my untrained eyes missed very non-basic tools), but that's usually the case, talent trumps equipment. You insist it can be learned, and I'm sure technique can be improved; but you have to be able to see the skyline or the tree. I've always enjoyed wandering through art museums and galleries, but I've never been able to see myself recreating the mental path they took to their result.

When you mentioned fountain pens I envisioned more of these:
https://www.levenger.com/writing-8/fountain-pens-831.aspx
Which I've always admired, but have never purchased because I've never actually used a fountain pen.

Cork, you are quite right about being able to see the skyline or the tree. The most important thing I learned very quickly is you have to draw what you see - not what you think you see. You don't draw a skyline or a tree. You make marks with values (shades) that define shape and texture and give the illusion of a skyline or tree.

Many get frightened of drawing because they can't produce photo-realistic work. But photo-realism is just a small subset of a myriad of styles. Look at this one. Even though I had no clue what I was doing because I'm a newbie, the loose sketch style is nonetheless pleasing. A splash of simple watercolors added more interest and depth.

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

Just start by loosely drawing shapes like squares, circles and triangles. Use pencil, pen, or marker. Extend to boxes, spheres and pyramids. Add shading and texture. Drawing is nothing but an assembly of basic shapes and tones arranged in visually pleasing perspectives. Sketch daily and don't judge your work.

As for fountain pens, they're laborious. Talking with others, I've learned my Lamy Safari is among the best for not clogging. But apparently the Amazon Basics is similarly good.

Ya a big +1 to that statement.
I had to draw a textbook quality figure of a bone structure in university. Had to have included dot shading techniques and some other things. That was our lab exercise for weeks. I still have the drawing on the wall because for someone like me without a natural ability for hand based art, it came out pretty damn good.
That's probably the last thing i've ever really drawn that wasn't a map or technical sketch for a project.

How? That’s clearly a cassette tape. That’s a direct link to nostalgia of the highest order. Dam I used to make some of the best mix tapes ever! Recorded straight off the fm tuner with the volume recording level at 75% , just below the point it would distort but still get max volume so I could juice it on my Walkman and foam covered headphones.

The good ole days!!!

Us old people would instantly recognize a cassette tape but you need to remember that there are a lot of kids today who have never even seen a CD.

I used to have those needles just floating over into the red, for the maximum dynamic range!

My short story on youngsters and tapes ...
When I was at school I renovated my room and put in, among other things, a built-in stereo cabinet. When I went back some 25 years later it was still there (I'd like to think it was because it was so well built), and the kid who had the room complimented me, but asked, "But what's this rack you built next to it for?" Of course it was for cassette tapes, he had no idea what to put in those slots.

Thanks much. It's very addictive. Try this with your fountain pen. It only took me 6 hours...LOL! Pencil not allowed.

Seriously though, just start scratching out some shapes...like your speakers.
