I've heard the M2's are not good for back surrounds, being somewhat muddy or something. I dont know, they also were using them as stereo speaker so who knows. I just want the enveloping sound and I think the Q8s or even the Q4s might do a good job of that for the back speakers. I'm just not sure right now.

This is just plain wrong. I have a pair of M2's which I use as back surrounds, and when I play SACD's they blend very well with my M60's. They don't sound muddy in the least.

I likewise own a pair of M2i's. I had them first as rears in a 7.1 system, but due to a combination of needing some cash (hence, selling the amp that powered them) and not being totally blown away by the difference between 5.1 and 7.1, I've moved them into my game room, and they are now my "computer" speakers. They sound as clean and clear as all my other Axioms. Not sure where the muddy idea would have come from. Especially as rear effect speakers. Do you realize how little is routed to the rears? And what is routed there, is not dialog, it's mostly just sound f/x.

While I can't comment on the muddiness (or lack thereof) in the M2s, I would still go for a high quality rear surround speaker pair in your 7.1 setup. With PLIIx, the rear surroudn experience is opening up. These days, Yamaha is making amps with 8 channel input to accomodate future decoder technology for SACD and/or DVD when 7.1 DVDs arrive. Like my father always said, buy once - buy the best.
