Looking on my H/K speaker settings theres a sub setting for global or independent.
What does this mean? What does it do? Is one setting better than the other for different apps. like between HT or stereo tunes??

Global means that the settings for the speakers/sub/bass management apply for all the inputs. Independant means that you set them individually for all of the inputs. Choose accordingly...

I've been using independent, because I like my M50s set to large for music and small for HT.

that's strange Ken, I would have assumed that global meant the same crossover point for all speakers and independent would be seperate crossover points for the different speakers.

On a crack side note - you guys have heard that former Mayor Marion Barry of D.C. (and infamous crack notariety) is trying to make a political comeback. This will be comeback number two. His previous attempt was foiled when he was caught with marijuana and - yup, you guessed it - crack in his car a couple of years ago.

OK, after being conscious for more than 3 hours, I can see what you're getting at. The global/independant thing has nothing to do with the triple or quadruple crossover, it just refers to whether the bass is managed the same on all of the inputs (CD, DVD, etc). In other words, will the speakers be set to small with an 80 Hz crossover for CDs, DVDs, radio, VCR, etc. or not?

Can I start this thread all over? I know less now than when I first asked the question. And now I have even more questions about other settings on my H/K that I'm scared to ask all you crack heads.

Brady, Ken's answer is uncracked. Global here doesn't mean that all speakers are necessarily set with the same crossover frequency to the sub, but that whatever settings those are, they apply identically to all inputs for different sources(such as CD and DVD).

I dont really think anyone here is a crack head, and I thank EVERYONE HERE for putting up with my ignorance. I think maybe I asked the question in the wrong order of questions to be asked.
In light of all thats been said, I now ask what is crossover ? I know there are crossover settings on my H/K reciever, I just dont understand them, or how I should go about setting them. Maybe after I figure out crossover settings I'll understand more about global / independant sub settings.
My last reciever was cheepo JVC that had none of the bells and whistles my new H/K has. Hell, it took me a full day just to hook up my CD,DVD/VCR, and DirectTV box to the thing.
Again sorry for the ignorance, and thanks for all the input.

The crossover is a cutoff point. Everything under the chosen crossover will be sent to the subwoofer, instead of to the specified channel. You would want to use this so that you don't "lose" chunks of sound, and to get the most out of your subwoofer.

For example (assuming you can set independent crossovers for different channels):
If you have qs8, they are rated from 95-22K. If you set your crossover for your surrounds to be 80Hz, all the sound above 80Hz will go to the qs8s, and below will go to the subwoofer. This leaves a band of sound from 80-95 Hz that might be "lost" (depending on how steeply the qs8s drop off below 95Hz). For this reason you might want to set your crossover for your surrounds to be 100Hz.

That said, a lot of people just set the crossover at 80Hz for all channels and leave it there.

A crossover is, very basically put, a separater of frequencies. It (very loosely speaking) cuts off frequencies below or above a certain point, say 80 Hz.

In this case, the crossover cuts off (rolls off) everything above 80 Hz for the speakers, and everything below 80 Hz goes to the sub. This is IF you set your speakers to small. If they are set to large, and you set an 80 Hz crossover, 80 Hz and below will go to the sub, but everything will go to the speakers.

The Harman/Kardon models have what they call a triple or quadruple crossover, where you can set different crossover points for the various speakers (front, center, surrounds, rears if you're lucky). An example of this for movies would be an 80 Hz crossover for M22s, a 90 Hz crossover for the VP100, and an 100 Hz crossover for the QS4s, with all speakers set to small. So the sub gets everything below 80 Hz for the fronts, everything below 90 for the center, and everything below 100 Hz for the surrounds.

If you go into the OSD (on screen display) and choose speaker setup, you can change these settings, first setting the speakers to large or small, and bass management (marked as sub) to global or independant. The you can flip over to the crossover screen to set the crossovers.

Okay, I think I'm beginning to see the light.
I just got M22s , QS8s,(not hooked up yet) and a VP100 last Sat. Already had a Velodyne CHT 10.
My listening space is about 18x16. Primary listening habits are 90% music of all kinds and 10% HT. This percentiage will change I'm sure once I get everything hooked up and understood.
I'm going into the attic now to run speaker wire and will get back to you guys with more ignorant questions I'm sure.

i feel your pain.. i was sweating like a whore in sunday school when i got in the attic to do my wires. after climbing out over the beams, and getting face first a few times in the fiberglass, i thought i was about to pass out.. once all the wire got strung, and i climbed down, i was soooo wet from sweat, that i looked like i had taken a bath.. then, all the insulation was sticking to me, so i looked like i had big pods of cotton stuck on me from head to toe.

i would strip down to your underwear and use the waterhose outside to rinse it all off, then go take a good shower.. i ended up tracking that crap all over my house.
