FInally I had time with my Axioms all alone...except fot the dogs and cats.

Last night I made a new Sampler CD with STP, The Police, Joe Satriani, Iron Maiden, Rush, Boston, much more.

I have to comment about my JBL-PB-10 sub...Sting's Bass on Spirits in the MAterial world was beyond amazing. I had never relly thooght of the police as a groovin band. Just a very cool and unique rock/punk band. I was impressed as i heard Sting strum loud and clear,

As for the Axs- Jump by VH was so cool on the keyboards. Joe Satrianni was about as clear as a crystal. I have to put some Coltrain and some Wagner (which I am having trouble finding) to the test.

Anyway the Bass compliments the Axs as they took the lead and really sound sweet at a pretty loud level.

I have a fear of hurting them so they were not mega cranked like when i was a kid...but it was LOUD.

And I loved it.

Hey, how loud can we go on the M22s...or will we know whne to stop befor damage? Or does the reciver protector work faithfully?

I like some of your taste in music, we must come from the same "My Generation"...anyway my Axioms will be arriving next week. Will definately plan on dusting off some of the old cds I have not listened to for a bit, you know married life, 2 kids, etc...Anyway, now that the basement/rec room/HT is about done I will be anxious when the wife takes the kids to the mall so I can crank up some Rush, Boston, Scorpions, Ozzy, Van Halen, Dokken, Sammy Hagar, The Who, 38 Special, etc....

If you like Joe, don't forget to give G3 a listen when him and Vai and a few others do some jamming. AWESOME dvd to say the least!

I dont' know what kind of receiver you have, but if it's putting out atleast 150w of clean power then it's safe to say you can crank it as loud as your ears can take, otherwise if your receiver clipped and if you didn't back it down, then distortion will occur and you'll be in risk to burn out the M22's voicecoil anytime.

sirquack- you might find that some of those 'old' recordings dont sound so great on the axioms. it has been discussed on here a lot, but the axioms reveal flaws in recordings that you might not have heard with your former speakers.

with that said, of the bands you listed, several sound very GOOD.. Rush, Boston, and Van halen have all sounded great on my system. and if you can play SACD's, get 'TOMMY' on sacd, sounds awesome.

So what is the scoop on SACD anyway? It has been awhile since I purchased any CD's, I used to be in the BMG cd club. Are these newly ramastered CD's? Sorry for my ignorance...sorry for my ignorance...

man, i can sort of explain a SACD, but dont expect me to get all technical, i am no expert.. but basically, they take the original recording, and remaster the mix into a 5.1, multi channel mix. so instead of the original 2 ch recording, you have a true 5.1 output from your cd player. the clarity and quality on a well mixed sacd is second to none. you get great sound seperation thru ALL the speakers, and the overall surround effect is just awesome.

now, to play sacd's, you have to have a cd/dvd player that plays sacd's, and you have to hook it to the receiver using interconnectors for each channel. in other words, instead of the basic red/white connection from a basic cd/dvd, you will have 6 connections, one for each channel(5.1)..

hope that makes sense.. some of the other guys with more skills might be able to explain it better. but, without a doubt.. the sacd experience is very much worth it. i have several, and i dig every one of them.. those are usually what i put in to 'impress' the friends when they come to listen to my system..

Explained in terms I appreciate, totally understand now..thanks bigjohn. So I would assume a lot of the newer AVR's out there are set up for these additional connections? Just purchased a new Denon 2805 7.1 so when I'm in the market for a new DVD player I might want to look for SACD if this receiver can match up.

I know with Pro Logic IIx, it will take any 2-channel stereo or even 5.1 material and convert it to convincing 7.1 (not mono rears) sound. I think this receiver also has something called DTS 96/24 which I guess also improves audio recordings.

yes, the 2805 has the connections for the sacd. yes, if you are into good music, go ahead and get a cd/dvd player with sacd capabilities.

the pro logicII will be no help with the sacd's. being that you connect them with the 6 interconnectors, it is a true 5.1.. the two rears will not be utilized. i believe the DTS 96/24 is the amount of dacs used in translating the digital signal.. that is fairly standard.

since you dig the old rock and roll, if you do get a sacd player, make these dics the top of your list..

those are 4 great ones to start your collection.

I've been listening to my AC/DC collection since I got my M80's. Then I bought an Outlaw sub, and now I'm going through everything again. I feel like a teenager again, minus the dope.

Try Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. Not a great recorded CD, but sounds totally cool if you can ignore the his during the intro's.

75% of the people I knew as a teenager, still smoke pot. Some are lawyers, executives for multi nationals etc. Always makes me laugh when they come over to watch a game or whatever and they run in to my garage for a "pit stop" lol

yeah, everyone knows pot isn't addictive -- which is why they smoke it all the time.

Peter. I know, for a certainty, based on personal experimentation (I didn't inhale ), that pot is NOT addictive. Unfortunately, getting high IS!

Careful guys. MarkB might not ask any of your opinions if he knows you smoke pot...........................

I agree with everyone else. Based on my own experience, pot is anything but addictive.

Was reading in the manual of my new Denon 2805 and it mentions that it has "7.1 external wide bandwidth (100 kHz) inputs for multi-channel formats, such as DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD." Bigjohn mentioned that sacd is 5.1? So I wonder if while using Pro Logic IIx that is supposed to be able to convert any 2 chanel or 5.1 signal to convicing 7.1 would allow me to enjoy sacd on all 7.1 channels?

it just might.. thats an interesting feature on the denon. maybe someone with a similar unit can elaborate. thats new to me.

The aforementioned "personal experimentation" was performed in a former life, decades ago (The Viet Nam experience'll do that to you). I think I personally smoked 75% of all the pot grown in the 1970s, because the entire decade is just one big smokey haze.

But, like all childhood toys, there comes a time when they must be set aside. MarkB has nothing to worry about, from me, these days. However, he would be wise to avoid my opinions anyway.
