Pet peeve. A theory is not a conjecture or an "I think so." A theory is one step below a law. (nevermind that many "laws" are not entirely descriptive). A hypothesis is what you're thinking of. A theory has been proven by many tests. I don't remember what the differentiation between laws and theories is, but they're most closer than many people who disparage them think. I don't see what so many people have against science (not aimed at you, NH.) Without science, we'd all be living in the trees, or caves, or something.

k, thanks for the clarification! I'm not going to edit my first post as I still think that what I was trying to say is very much valid.
By the way, Is a theory based on fact or speculation? Not being a smartass, I really don't know.
As for science, I have nothing against it at all! I just don't need it to justify every point of view I have!

Here's a pretty good list of definitions.
I also recommend the Scientific American TV show (with Alan Alda) about placebos. It's not at all about audio/tech, about medicine, but it is interesting.
