Hi friends, I wanted to say hi and need you expertise as I will be purchasing Axiom soon. My dear old big screen is on its last legs and I will be replacing all audio and video systems. I started out researching the 42" Plasmas, then was going to pull the trigger on a 52” DLP Toshiba. Right now, I’m leaning towards the 50” Hitachi 50’ LCD screen. The only thing I have decided for sure are the Axiom Speakers. I’ve learned more in the last week from the Axiom owners then from any store. This will be my setup……50” HDTV Big Screen. The living room is 18’ x 16.5’ with 8-foot ceiling. The living room has carpet flooring, plaster walls with crawl space and attic.

Right now, I’m thing of the Grand Epic Home Theater or Epic 50 System. If I get the Grand Epic I would want to get front speakers, probably the M50ti’s. Any comments on which system or speakers to go with. Both systems are priced about the same but one system includes the OS4 rear surrounds and the other OS8’s? Is one better for movies and one for music, or is it room size? I watch a lot of movies but also listen to rock music. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Welcome spettifer. Although i've never listened to the m50's, the m22's are fantastic little buggers. With a good sub, they'll easily fill your space with wonderful, detailed sound. I recommend you perform a search comparing the m50's vs. m22's. There was a good thread a while back between these two speakers. This will get you started until more experienced axiomites can answer your questions. Cheers, Richeydog.

The differences between the two systems you mention are one has M22 for mains and Qs8's and the other has M50's and Qs4's

Everyone I've heard is happy with either their qS4 or Qs8's. Sonically I believe they're pretty much the same. The 8's just play louder. AND you wont get that ugraditus feeling...

The M22's and M50's are different sounding speakers, so you have to decide what kind of sound you would prefer. Their are lots of M22's owners around and they all LUV the M22. THey are know for their crystal clear mids and highs and excellent staging.
Their are also a few M50's owners that equally LUV them. These are said to be more laid back, and not quite as forward and just a little bit less clear in the mids and highs. Of course you'll have more bottom end with the M50's. If you can it would be best to audition either or both of these to determine which sound fits you the best. But by all accounts all of Axiom's speakers are excellent performers and a great value.

Welcome to Home Theatre Land.

CHeers, Jag

We compared the M22 and M50 directly a few months ago. I think you'll find our thoughts helpful:

I have the M22's and use them for 2 ch only. I do love my M60's but if compared to the 22's they are night and day. I would go with the M50's if I were you. I also have the QS4's and am very happy with them.

Regarding your Hitachi purchase, you may want to check out www.uecweb.com. They are an Auth. dealer of refurb units. I picked up my rear projection from them 2 years ago and it rocks, no issues at all. I know they have some nice deals from time to time and right now I'm watching their plasma page.

Good luck.

Btw, me being a bay area sports fan(a's,giants, niners), how about them Raiders?

We should do it again, now that I've got the M50s slightly better set up. Any excuse!

Hey Craig, curious about what you meant by:
In reply to:

In what way(s) did they differ, beyond the obvious better low end on the 60's?

Cheers, Jag

To me the M60 is a more "complete" speaker. You touched on it when you mentioned the low end. With the M22's you do need a sub to give it some bass but with the M60 I know that I can turn off my sub and not be that put out about it.

I see that you have a M22 you are using as your center. If you had one more it would be great to get your feelings on 2 cha M22 vs 2 chan. M60.

Lomb7 thanks for the reply.

Actually as of now I only have the EP500, I'm still waiting on the other pieces. But yes I will be using a M22 as a centre and I do plan on doing a side by side comparision between the M60 and M22 at some point. Actually, I believe Alan says its easier to compare single speakers in mono side by side so this may be just as effective comparison as between a 2 channel set up.... (Perhaps not for comparisons of sound staging)

Thanks, your sentiments are what I would have expected between the two.

Cheers, Jag

Hi friends,

After trying to shift through everybody’s opinion here and other sites, and confusing myself further, I purchased the Epic 50 System this weekend. I went with the light maple with black grills and I also purchased the stands for the QS4's. I was going back and forth about 50 times and was considering the M60’s and QS8’s. The money issue held me back from going all out; Toshiba 52’’ DLP, warranty, stand, etc. etc. Already well over my $$$$$ budget and already feel some buyers remorse. I’m sure I will be asking a lot of stupid questions once all the equipment gets here. Its amazing how obsessed you can get trying to pick just the right stuff.

Thanks again,

Scott

Good choice. The light maple with black grills looks very sharp.

As far as I can see from other posts the big benefit of the higher end speakers (QS8s, VP150) comes in a larger room. I think you'll be really happy with the qs4s and vp100.

Congrads, Spettifer you've ordered an awesome system and I'm certain you'll be thrilled with it! Great colours too.

This certainly does quickly become an obession on so many levels, why else would I be spending an entire weekend trying the find the "optimum" placement for my sub...

We're all learning, some members are just ahead of some of us, but there are no stupid questions, so ask away.

Have a great time with that beautiful system, Jag

I've pretty much got the Epic 50 sans sub and center, and let me tell you, it works quite nicely. You'll have to play with positioning on the M50s a bit, but that's true with any fine speaker. The beech with black grills are also nice (that's what my QS4s are) and look reasonably like real wood.
