Center behind screen?

I think cinemas put the center-speaker behind the screen, so I was thinking how it would influence the sound if I hid my VP150 behind the projector-screen. Would this disrupt the sound? Would it sound more like the sound was actually coming from the screen instead of above or below? I haven't bought the projector and screen yet so I can't just try it out :-)

a lot of people with projector screens do that. i personally dont have one, but i know that is a very common thing to do. in fact, the general belief is that it is better than putting the center channel above or below.
if you decide to do this, i think you will be perfectly fine. and the 150 is a great speaker. it does a great job of dispersing the sound.

But you have to get acoustically transparent fabric - thanks to Turbodog for this link to Dazian.

The link, or course, is mostly DIY stuff. There are companies that produce acoustically transparent screens as well.

You will need a perforated screen.

Yup, as these guys mentioned, acoustically transparent / perforated material is what you're looking for. All modern theaters put the left, right, center, AND subwoofer speakers behind the screen. Only the surrouds are visible to theater-goers.

I imagine the whole perforated screen thing works better at a theater where you have a big screen and sit way back so you can have reasonably large perfs in the screen and not notice...

Well, yeah... Is there a sacrifice in video quality by using those types of screens in a Home Theatre?

Dunno, I've never seen one
I did have a couple of friends who looked at the material (don't know brand or anything) and commented that the holes seemed pretty big... how's that for high quality information ?

Nonquantified hearsay. Pretty much standard internet quality information
I'm probably more than one new house away from front projection being a relevant part of my life anyway. By then, we'll probably be able to wirelessly beam the content directly into my brain. Now, if I can just get it to synch up with the voices...

Thanks, for the input, everyone. Does anybody know where to buy one of these perforated screens and if the picture-quality will suffer? The room is not built yet but the seating will probably be 3-4 meters from the screen.

Hello Mickey,
I've never seen a home installation of a perforated screen. You can check them out at www.stewartfilm.com or find the web site for Da-Lite screens. Check out www.projectorcentral.com as well; there may be info there.
I'm told that even with a perf screen, there are acoustical issues because the screen is not as acoustically transparent as the grill material on speakers, so it introduces reflections that compromise dispersion and liinearity. I've not done tests with these screens so I can't comment, but I've been told that you still have to equalize the center even if you use a perf screen.

Surface: Textured White PVC
Luminance:
0.95 on axis
0.8 off axis (300)
Material Width: 54”
This screen is designed for use where sound systems are required to be placed behind the screens, allowing minimal loss of audio signals.
Finished: Welded with grommets
Check out Dazian, they have been around a long time and sell to movie theatres, I just bought the non-perf stuff off them.
