Have any of you online shoppers had experience with ecost.com? Any good, bad or indifferent experiences?
I am looking at purchasing a Denon AVR-2105 from ecost.
They are back in stock and I am in a buying mood.
Cheers,
Shaun

i think everyone that i recall have had good experiences with them. they are the same company that owns macmall.com and pcmall.com. i bought my refurb Onkyo 701 from macmall, and have had no problem. service was good, delivery was ontime, and the unit was in perfect condition.
hope your experience goes well. there always seems to be an unpleasant level of discomfort when buying online.

Shaun, make sure they are an authorized Denon dealer. I bought an HK receiver from them which turned out to be a paperweight. Customer service was horrible-I ended up letting my credit card company fight with them. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth for e-Cost, but I know there are people on this forum who have had good results.

BigJohn,
I was looking at both Denon and Onkyo. Ecost won't ship Onkyo products to Canada (pity). There must be a North American distribution agreement in place to protect pricing?
Anyhow, a Denon should suffice! Thanks again for your input.

Mike,
I checked the Denon site and Ecost is an authorized Denon reseller. That's unfortunate that you had a bad experience with ecost. I suppose this can happen at anytime with online shopping? The other online store I looked at was etronics.com. All their product is new, not refurbished. Pricing is fairly decent and their reviews are good. Thanks for your reply.

i do have another buddy here in town that wants me to build him a cheap system. i think i might turn him on to ecost. they got an Onkyo 501 refurb for $150 bucks, with no shipping costs, thats just unreal.

Shaun,
I have purchased a Denon DVM-4800 (11/03) and a AVR-1905 (3/05) from ecost. I have 3 friends who have also purchased Denon refurb gear from them over the last year. All positive experiences and at substantial discounts.
They are an authorized Denon dealer. Just a few things to think about. Shipping is a tad expensive. The gear has a 90 day warranty. For not much money, you can also purchase an extended warranty.
As an aside, compare the 1905 to the 2105. The difference in features doesn't really justify the higher price of the 2105.
Good luck with it.

Hi Ray,
You are correct about the shipping costs being high, however I am purchasing from Vancouver, Canada and still saving about $400 compared to local prices. That $400 goes towards QS8's and an EP350.
The 2105 extras (10 watts/channel more, phono input and auto calibration) fit into what I was looking for.
I have a lot of old jazz (some direct to disc) lp's that will be begging for the turntable soon so I figured that would be a good option to have. I'll be waiting for Bren to chime in about the records snap, crackle pop etc.
This will be a major receiver upgrade for me and should keep me away from upgradeitis for a while.
Does the extended warranty apply directly to an authorized Denon repair facility?
Thanks for your response.

I bought a Denon 3800 DVD player from E-Cost many moons ago and it was a pain in the ass from day one. This however was not through any fault of E-Cost.........it was all Denon's.
E-Cost was easy to deal with and did everything in their power to make me happy. I would buy from them again if cross border shipping wasn't such a pain.

Neverhappy,
Was the problem with Denon in general, due to the product being purchased from the U.S. and not warrantied in Canada?
This is one of my worries about after market service. If, for some reason the unit breaks down, I don't want to ship it to the U.S. for repairs etc.

Shaun, the extended warranty is a third party, not Denon.

I tried to purchase a 3803 with a phone icon some months back. I never heard a thing and I was never notified why they would list the product on their website if they didn't have it in stock. I learned by experience that those little icons are important. I later ordered a 1083 which had a sun icon and received it within a week. The moral of my story is that one should never order a phone from them.

I bought my Denon 2910 from Clubmac, another authorized Denon reseller. I beleive that all of these resellers actually are just middlemen for the Denon factory. Because they all have the same products. My order for the 2910 was fantastic and I recieved the product within a week of ordering. The DVD player also looks brand new and works perfectly.

You got it. Denon Canada would not touch it under warranty. I could pay to have it fixed up here but if I wanted it done under warrany, It had to be shipped into the US. Pain in the &#^*ing ass to say the least. You run the risk of it getting damaged again during transit and to top it all off you have to go through the customs hassle again.

Thanks, for confirming my suspicions! I'll have to give this one some thought. Mind you, shipping electronics anywhere runs the risk of damage etc. The warranties on the refurbished units are only 90 days. You have to pay extra for additional coverage. I might just take my chances and hope that I don't have to pay for repairs on the money I saved.
