One piece of advice.
DO NOT RENT OR BUY THIS!
I had heard of the "awfulness" (is that a word?) of Lion's Gate Films but had not actually witnessed one. Now I have. Point taken.
My sister and brother-in-law rented this over the weekend...that is definitely close to two hours I want back! Tried to be open minded about it...but can't go there.
This movie looked like it was shot on home video, with a flawed plot, horrible acting and an ending that was just utterly ludicrous.
Unless you want to suffer through a movie with so many plot issues just for the masochistic pleasure of it, stay far, far away from this movie.

That the one where the couple were diving on the Great Barrier Reef and the boat full of divers left them out there? If so, my wife left less than halfway through.
Unfortunately it is a true story and I heard as result the Australian gov. passed a law with fairly strick requirements by dive guiding companies on how to keep track of their clients and not leave them out on the high seas.

What bugs me about the "shot on video" look is that it leaves you wondering "Why doens't the cameraman just help them out?"
There are other movies that use the effect well, but then actual characters are (allgedly) doing the filming.

Open Waters is not that bad, maybe the fact that the movie budget was 150,000 dollars, and acted by totally amateurs and semi-professional actors would had help you assimilate the movie more easily.
I agree with you, the acting was mediocre and most scenes at the hotel were very cheesse. What I like about the movie though is the way they tell the story; they did not resort to any sensationalistic or unrealistic plot. The sharks behave like, er, sharks, a novel concept for Hollywood . They tried to present the events as close as possible to real life. Yeah, I know, it's a slow movie, yet in real life that would have been a very slow death too. 8-O ...oh, and the end, what would you've done in her situation?

I guess you can appreciate movies more than I can. I thought the movie sucked. Definitely in the top five worst movies I've ever seen. And based off of your logic, I should like 'The Blair Witch Project' too. It only had like a $50,000 budget. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, but you get my point. Open Water was definitely a waste of $2.

I know exactly what you mean... I didn't say on my post that I thought it was a great movie. I've seen way better movies done with half that budget, 'The Return' comes to mind, it's Russian. What I tried to say was that that movie was done by a 'weekend warrior' regular Joe, he didn't even left his day job while filming. Given those circumstances the movie was pretty darn good.
BTW: Blair Witch Project is one of the very few movies I had walk-out from the theather and I have a lot of patience for movies; I didn’t even make it half way - hate it ... see, now I'm dizzy
