My local Good Guys is going through some remodeling and has all their demo units priced very, very low.
Anybody seen the Halo A23 lower than $500?
How about the MA Silver center? It seemed a touch sibilant - anybody else hear that?
Thanks in advance - and please don't call me a c*nt.

BW2, i will call you a "cent" if i want to, but i prefer to call you a dollar.
I have not heard the Silver centres oddly enough, so i cannot say, but i have looked around for Halo A23s before and no, i have never come across one even used that cheap.
I think the cheapest i found on Audiogon was $650 or so, however an older unit now might go for a bit less.
In the same price range you could look for both Anthem and Odyssey Stratos products. Neither of them run nearly as hot and the Anthem has great power specs. Spiff and mwc can attest to the functionality of the Odyssey amps.

Odyssey also has a Khartago amp. Similar to the Stratos with slightly less power and a less ornate chasis. I'm expecting mine in a couple of weeks. Klaus is great to deal with and understands what customer service is all about. Another "Axiom class" company.

My post was to say don't let then take a deposit and wait for them to order units. Also seems some GG stores are stating they can no longer order Paraound products. As for buying a demo Halo from them, the 5/10 year warranty will still be serviced by Parasound, and begins from date of sale. This is the info I received well talking to Parasound in SF directly, so if one wants to save a few bucks and buy a demo, it has the same warranty as new.

Thanks, folks. So... good deal or not on the A23, there are still options that might be as good for similar $.
Are your Halos running very hot, Tharkun? (At sane listening levels, that is).
And the Silver center??? I'm happy with the VP150, but my anality is making me think matching the fronts will create a more seamless presentation. OTOH, the VP150 is excellent, especially intelligible with voices, and is paid for.
Nevermind.

Well I can only speak for my expieriance about Halos running hot, but with the A51/A21 that I audtiioned at Good Guys for over two hours and high volume levels, they did not run hot. They were in a entertainment style cabinet, front/back open, and 8 - 10 inches of clearance between units.
As all can see from my web pictures, my four A21s have ample clearance, and even at what most seem are high volume levels, none run any where near HOT. The one that is doing most of the work driving the front 80s, never gets to a temp that one can not place a hand on it, what I would call warm, yes, hot, not at all. Well having had the A51 here, it did not run hot either.
When we set the BFD up, Lee had a temp gun and checked the amp temps, but I do not remember what they were, perhaps he, Peter, or Adam will be of help on that.

My best friend and fellow audio fanatic has a 5 channel Halo Parasound amp and it runs HOT. He had a huge ATI amp which he got rid of for the Halo. The ATI ran cool.

Just out of curiosity, what would be considered hot on an amp? Seems like I've heard conflicting thoughts, heat doesn't matter vs heat hurts 'em...is there a baseline or point of measurement as a start?

I'd say the threshhold between warm and hot is found by using your hand. If you can comfortably keep your hand on the hottest part of the amp, then it's warm. If it feels like it'll burn you, that's hot.

Thanks Peter, whenever I was turning up mine the other day that is exactly what I was doing. What may seem hot to one person may seem lukewarm to another, so I can see where conflicting thoughts may come into play.

Thanks Peter, that is my judgementt as well, and why I stated that in my expierance with seven differant Halos, none ran hot. Pehaps I just got the only ones that Parasound made that does not run hot.

I run my Denon 2802 at reference levels, and it never runs hot. I have my cable box sitting on top of it and about half an inch on the sides. It always runs great for me. I dont know what you guys are doing to burn up your amps.

That is pretty much the way I have always heard on how to judge if an amp is running hot.My Rotel amp only gets warm when I am running it hard.

While over at Dennis house during the Sub calibration, I ran soom Temp. checks with a caibrated digital Temp meter and got a temp reading on his Halos Running the front two M80ti speakers of 116 and 118 degrees respectively. These guys of Dennis just don't run the least bit hot this was after at least 5 hours of running.

I have an MA silver center with my s10 fronts. I've watched lot of movies on it in the last week since getting it but I haven't noticed any sibilance yet. What movie(s) did you notice this on. I'd like to give them a try and see if mine does this too.

We briefly demo-ed the last of the Lord of the Rings movies. The scene had that Gollum creature and the little hobbits. The center was positioned on a shelf and surrounded by other speakers - far from ideal. That's why I sought an opinion here.

Ummm, that's about 50% of the movie.
