I'm relatively new to the world of hi-fi, so please excuse if this is a simple question. I noticed the m3 w/ stands would cost as much as the m40. I realize the m40 has slightly deeper bass, but is there a tradeoff when the technology moves to a larger cabinet? What are the advantages of the smaller m3, if any?

The M40 is a tower version of the M3. The larger cabinet gives you a bit more low frequency in the M40 but otherwise there is not much difference and none if you have a sub-woofer in your system. This brings your decision down to aesthetics, do you prefer the look of the M3's on stands or the M40's.
