Here's something for the Axiom owner who likes to shoot billiards.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Axiom pool cues - 12/30/05 02:04 AM
That is one hell of a good idea, to bad our Axiom did not come out with them first. Maybe they could make some with wireless speakers built in...

Kinda getting into the fanboy realm arn't we?
Posted By: Wid Re: Axiom pool cues - 12/30/05 02:33 PM

I'm no more of a fanboy than you are, as a matter of fact you own more Axiom products than I do . It was just something of intrest to look at.

Anyway I can support a company I believe in like AxiomAudio, I'll do it, even if they come out with a widget with their name on it...Nothing wrong with supporting Axiom.

Hey Rick.

I used to make a lot of money playing pool when I was stationed in Newport. Too many rich college kids with too much of daddy’s money, too much pride and not enough brains to know they were in for trouble. I wouldn’t play for less than $100 a stick and didn’t loose very often. I didn’t even try to hustle. I’d walk right in with my original Balabushka. Every once in a while I shoot a few games, but it’s just not as fun anymore when I’m not taking money away from idiots.

Mike the price of the Balabushkas have always kept me from seriously considering one. I have owned a couple of Viking cues and a nice custom that I had made here locally. As of right now I have an inexpensive no frills Brunswick. It's a nice shooting cue but nothing to fancy.

Another plus of me getting my basement done asap, is that my folks are giving us their pool table. Now that us kids have moved on, it does not get played that much. It is like 15-20 years old, but was top of the line back then and has a 3 piece slate top which I believe is around 5/8 or 3/4. The felt is still very nice, but I may go ahead and redo that during the move.

One question? Can pool balls get old or lose their action? I can still get 6-7 rails with them using the old arm toss, however, they just don't seem to have as much english as they used to when I was younger. Granted the cues are the old wood standards that came with it like you see in the bar, so I plan to get some new cues. I called a local place that we bought it from and they said we could also look at the bumpers, but I think they are also fine.

I don't think that a set of billiard balls lose anything just over the course of time. Now if they showed signs of wear I would suggest replacing them. Maybe it is not the balls that lost "their english" Randy .
There may be a chance that over the period of years the cushions might have lost a bit of there action. Are you hiring someone to move and set the table up? If so that would be the perfect time to upgrade the cloth to something like this or the equivalent. I personally like a bit faster table.

My dad and another friend of mine will most likely move it in my silverado. It is not bad once you seperate everything, although, the slate is still heavy. I could probably do the table top myself, not sure about the bumbers. WoW, that looks like nice cloth...

You should use a green marker around the numbers to restore that English. It's like lifting a veil from your game.

On a more serious note, good english requires a good tip on the end of the cue. It needs to "grip" the ball during the millisecond of contact.
Posted By: michael_d Re: Axiom pool cues - 12/31/05 03:37 PM
I didn’t actually buy it; I won it in a game from a punk that most definitely didn’t know what he had. It was one of the original cues made before the company was sold. It’s getting the grip re-wound now. A local guy makes cues and he’s doing the work, and making me a custom stick. He’s in his 70’s and it takes him about a year, but he makes beautiful stuff, exactly the way you want.

Well at least now the cue is in someones hands that can appreciate what it is. I was out yesterday and was looking at one of these, they are a beautiful piece of work.

Sweet!! Not too flashy, and not too boring. Just right. I prefer 18oz with an ity bitty tip myself for shooting, and break with the bar cues.
Posted By: Wid Re: Axiom pool cues - 12/31/05 04:03 PM

I was talking to the guy that was working there and he was showing me one that he had for sale. He told me he would let it go for 50% off of retail, I'm really considering it. I too like an 18 oz with a medium tip (Le Pro). I use a dimes contour to shape the tip.

Regular "picking" and shaping of the cue tip should help with this. I personally shape to the edge of a nickel, and I use a hard tip, but I don't play many masse shots.

Phenolic balls (or ivory if you've got a really old set) don't lose their "action" over time, though chips, nicks and being generally dirty can affect how they play.

I recently moved over to 9-ball from a misspent youth playing Snooker and Boston... it's a new and interesting challenge. Focuses a lot of your game on your leave.

OK, Ken. Here I am catching up on the last few days of posts and that's you second reference to the "veil"... and I'm callin' you out on it!

For all the BS I DO hear and read about in terms of descriptions, this is one of the very, very few that make sense to me! It's not my fault that some use it in reference to power cords!

To me, "lifting a veil" works well because I think it has a visual equivalent... and I would describe a "veiled sound" as "the highs in particular not being sharp or defined...just not "clear" sounding".

Going from my old TimeFrame 400's to my Axioms was definitely, absolutely like lifting a veil as my other speakers had crappy tweeters and the Axioms are "crisp"!

That's as may be, but it is the most overused term in audio hokum. Well, that and "warm, sweet."

waitaminnit, i thought it was "Bose"??
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Axiom pool cues - 01/01/06 06:47 PM
Sorry, high end audio hokum.
Posted By: AshBoomstick Re: Axiom pool cues - 01/03/06 04:48 PM
but there's a Bose Store in the high-end mall nearby, doesn't that make it high-end audio equipment?? *snicker*
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Axiom pool cues - 01/03/06 05:02 PM
There's a Bose store in the Leesburg outlets, too. I want to lug my Axioms in there and ask if I can do a direct comparison just to see the looks of horror on their faces.
