Just wondering if Axiom has a model of tower speaker with a 5.25" woofer, 6.5" woofer and 1" tweeter in the plans?

Wouldn't this technically make it have the same sonic properties as the M80s if it has the 5.25" woofer in addition to a 6.5" woofer?

I did notice that the M50s, M60s and M80s have Dual 6.5" woofers, so do Axiom floor standers require Dual 6.5" woofers to be a decent floor standing speaker?

It's a popular concept around here, but Ian doesn't seem to be taking people's suggestions.

It's fun to speculate, but I have absolute faith that - if such a design made sense sonically and financially - we'd have it already.

Axiom is an R&D company. Ian has been a successful professional speaker designer for decades. I'm going to trust him to design his products and run his company while I continue to enjoy listening to my M60's.

Hutzal,

Your first suggestion already exists--it's the M60, except it has two 6.5-inch woofers. The 5.25-inch driver is a woofer/midrange unit, covering upper bass from 200 Hz up to a good chunk of the midrange. At 2 kHz, the 5.25 crosses over to the tweeter.

Using dual 6.5-inch woofers below 200 Hz enables more powerful bass output, and deeper bass as well as better power handling. The two woofers are roughly equivalent to a single 12-inch woofer in an enclosure of similar volume, but using two smaller enable much better control ("tighter") than would be the case using a large-diameter woofer. You can also make the enclosure narrower and less overwhelming.

I'll be bookmarking this one for my "of two drivers of identical materials, a larger one will move more air, go deeper, yet a smaller one will sound tighter and react more efficiently to source material" aka the "farty bass" conversation.

I was suggesting (like others have before I guess) that replacing one of the 6.5" woofers in the M50 would yield a cheaper foor standing model with decent bass (enough for a 2 channel system) and containing the sonic properties of a 3-way Axiom Tower.

So it would be a 1" Tweeter, 5.25" woofer, 6.5" woofer for a cheaper version of the M60. Doesn't play as loud, but sounds the same.

You guys must have done experiments with this setup?

As an M50 owner, I must say:

"Leave the 50's alone!"

I love 'em just as they are...

I bet such a 3-way speaker would be more expensive than the M50's, since the cost difference of a 5.25" driver vs. the 6.5" driver must now include a more complicated crossover design.

Can anyone tell by my post count that it was a slow day at work?

So this is how Peter feels.

I used to resemble that remark. You'll notice that, oh, about June -- coinciding with my job transfer -- the rate of my posting decreased significantly. I pretty much only have time for snarks now.
