We are going on a big family trip this year to Breckenridge, Colorado from Saturday June 28 to Saturday July 5. I know that Breckenridge is big on winter sports, but what about the summer? Anyone been there? A majority of us that are going aren't in to fishing, so the couple people that are in to that have all ready been told to find out their own information since they would obviously know what they would be looking for.

On this trip will be my family (me, my wife, and our two daughters who will be 9 and 14), my wife's brother and his family, her two sisters and their family, and my mother and father-in-law. All of the other kids will be between the ages of 1 and 3, so nothing crazy for them. A few years back we went to the Smokey Mountains and did a lot of hiking, and some white water rafting which was pretty fun. I am sure that we can do those kinds of activities in Breckenridge as well.

So what else is there to do in the area in summer?

Just west of the Denver area is Mount Evans, it has the highest road you can drive on in the US. It gets pretty curvy near the top, the trees eventually stop growing, you see snow even in June, and Mountain goats, etc..I think at the top it is 15,000+ ft up. If your around there it is the drive. I think the town close by is Evergreen, if my memory serves me correct. \:\)

Watch out for the altitude. Absolutely the highest snow skiing I've ever done. If there is any way you can spend a day or two at ~6000-8000 ft to get used to the difference, you'll be better off. Out of 200 of us, more than 50% were diagnosed with altitude sickness - headaches, vomiting, fever; very similar to flu symptoms. Our condo was at 11,000 and we would ski the entire 13,000 to 9,600 ft range. Great time, other than the first 3 days. Steamboat Springs is still my favorite ski place, imho, partly because of the altitude.
Summertime there's lots to do http://breckenridge.snow.com/summerhome.asp

I betting there are some great hiking trails up the mountain as well, but I've never been there.
