I watched the old miniseries "Into the West" this past week and weekend. I know that Spielberg left out a lot of "stuff" - but he also put in a lot of "stuff" that actually happened.....this will get your "blood up" in a similar manner as the Changeling. I need to ratchet it back a couple of notches this weekend - maybe the NCAA's?

I'll watch it later on my TiVo. But only to make you happy, Charles!

The Princess Bride [Blu-ray]
I just watched a few scenes tonight. The full viewing will come later, so these are my premature impressions.
The extra resolution is nice, though there can be an awful lot of grain to the picture, depending on the scene. It's at least an improvement over the DVD releases, though I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. The audio was clean and clear, though it's not a very demanding soundtrack.
The menu system is actually reminiscent of the menu I had in a version of the Princess Bride website I ran for a number of years. I say reminiscent, but I mean it's the exact same idea, only of higher quality and with actual animation. I'm going to just pretend that I'm the reason they used that idea.

I watched Akira [Blu-ray] last night. I'm kind of disappointed. While the picture quality was amazing--to the absolute limit of the original animation cells. The image is under-scanned, so when viewed in 1:1 pixel mode, there is a black frame around the entire image, that's the top, bottom, along with the left and right. Also the 192kHz/24-bit audio (the reason I bought this movie) is underwhelming. Sure, it is crisp and clear, but it is also totally free from dynamics. It is just loud all the time. I usually watch films with the volume set at -18 dB for ones with limited dynamic range so the dialog seems natural but there's still a little punch in the louder parts, movies with a wide dynamic range usually sound natural at -15 (and then really get to kick when something goes boom). This Akira disc sounded loud all the time at -21. Disappointing.
