There is an abundance of iridium. I have over 350000 units of iridium and can't even upgrade anything with it (wish I could sell it for credits). Same with platinum and palladium . Element zero on ther other hand I am finding is very scarce. Once I upgraded my scanner I can complete a planet in 5-7 minutes.
It only takes me about 5 minutes to scan a planet right now so what exactly does the scanner do? I’m in the same boat of not being able to do any more upgrades until I level up some characters abilities. I must have found the same planet you did CV. That’s where I got the majority of mine.

The scanner seems to move faster around the planet once I upgraded. I have used up all the possible upgrades for iridium, platinum and palladium except for element zero. I just finished a session and now I have in excess of 500000 units of iridium, 400000 units of palladium and approx 270000 units of platinum. Element zero I have only around 17000 units at the moment and able to do a few uprades with it, but saving it for now. Also when you scan planets you can find anamolies which give you access to more assignments. I have found about 4 so far in my process. I still have a lot of scanning to do.... I scan the entire planet until it gives scan results of depleted (you still can find stuff when it says it)

For iridium scan any planet, it is by far the most common where you get big spikes on the meter. It appears on every planet I have scanned. Element zero is hard to find usually you do not get any on a planet. I will have to take notes where I find some.

well I beat Mass Effect 2 tonight. I only rented the game so was kind of rushing through the main quest. I did the bare minimum when it came to building up my squad, upgrading my ship, ect. and only did a few side quests.
I was able to beat the game in about 20 hours (played on veteran for the first 12-15 hours, then switched to normal to speed up the play a little bit).
I won't throw any spoilers out there but will say that it is a very good game all the way up 'till the bitter end.
I might roam around a bit and do some more exploring and miscellaneous side quests now that I have finished the game... but I will be returning it soon.

Finished! No way I could slam this game. Like Cognac I will savor it. Not sure if you are already doing it but you don't have to hold the scan button down while surveying the planet. I just tap the button every 4 squares 6 near the poles as you rotate the globe below the scanner and you'll see the spike and possibly get the tone and vibration if there is anything nearby. Scanning goes a lot faster that way since the globe turns much faster when the scanner button isn't held down. I seldom miss anything using this method
