I can see applying something to paper cones to make them more rigid??

For string instruments, like the violin, there have been numerous debates and studies on the difference in tonal quality with changes in varnish.

Thing is, that makes sense, since the body of the violin is something you want to resonate, something that HAS to resonate to make the sound of the instrument. If your preamp is resonating, dude, you've got a problem!
