I haven't frequented these forums in a long time, but it's nice to see this community still thriving! I've had Axioms in my home theater for almost seven years now, and they still sound amazing to me.

Recently, I pointed a friend of mine to Axiom for his HT project, and I'm heading over to his house for some setup and calibration tonight. He has M22 on-walls for his mains and M2s for surrounds.

His main seating position will be about 9 feet from the front wall and he plans to position the speakers about 8 feet apart (with a 55" LCD in between). This is similar to my setup at home, so thought he'd be in good shape for stereo imaging and even a phantom center if he chooses not to dive into a center channel right away.

Thinking further, though, I have my M60s "toed-in" a bit to help with imaging, but that doesn't seem to be an easy option with the on-walls. Does anyone have any tips they can share for on-wall speakers? Do they simply need to be placed closer together than floorstanders to get proper imaging since they can't be pointed toward the listening position? Any help would be appreciated.

From my experience, the on-walls produce a wider sound stage that may not require you to toe-in on them. I would just wait and see first. If you want to keep them wide spread and toed in, then the only recourse that I'm aware of is having to build something and mount them to that, but then you would probably lose the wide sound staging and bass boost from the lower ports by doing so.

That is one of the trade offs going with the aesthetically pleasing WAF speakers opposed to normal speaker designs. As Cat mentioned if you want to toe-in the on walls you have to build a section of wall that is at the appropriate angle for said toe-in. Since he is 9ft back and the speakers are 8ft apart this should help. I would bet the system will sound great flush mounted and won't require any toe-in to sound good.

I have the in/on wall series and asked about this during my final purchase phase. Alan replied to me that all listening tests with the in/on walls was done with them mounted flat as they were designed that way. I am guessing they'll be just fine.

Scott, welcome back. Yes, a somewhat narrower separation than the commonly suggested as wide as your distance from them will bring the tweeters more in line with your ears when toe-in isn't feasible.

If there's too much toe-in, is it called a camel-toe-in?

I'm not sure, but if you toe them in so much that you see the backs of the speakers, it's called a wedgie.
