Tom, I'm pretty sure you can run an optical cable and still get 5.1.
That's how I ran my first Xbox before the Elite came along.

By the way, I just checked in the closet and I still have my old Monster Cable component cable with the optical doohickey thingy.
It's yours for the price of free!
Um, on second look, I'm don't remember if it was for the original Xbox or the 360? Crap.

I am currently running my xbox360 with optical cable for surround sound with no problems whatsoever.
I have been playing a lot of the Socom4 beta on PS3 the last two days. Pretty damn good game if you ask me. I'm thinking about buying that one when it comes out.

One of my XBoxes is older and doesn't have HDMI out, so I run it through component and optical. Like David said, it works great.

Finished the final, story influencing part of Dragon Age: Origins, the Witch Hunt. But I'm not going to start Dragon Age II yet, because of all the bug reports I'm seeing. Things like it not honoring the choices you made in Origins. I didn't spend 120 hours playing through that game to have the world I built be ignored. Will wait for a patch or two.
So I'm going back to Mass Effect 2, which I stopped playing because it was so buggy (it got it's patch).

Finally played a kinect.... Very fun! I played some bowling, ping pong, and boxing on the sports game. Fun with 6 adults and lots of beer......

The 360 version is not buggy at all. Damn porting to cell!

Which do you mean? DA2 or ME2? It's true that ME2 on the PS3 did ship with more bugs than it had on the 360 at the time (but the 360 version was not bug free when it shipped, and still has little ones).
But DA2 is buggy on every platform. If you're playing it, count yourself lucky if you haven't triggered a game breaking (i.e. some internal variable gets set in a contradictory way so the game cannot be finished) bug.
