Jeff, Who Lives at Home

It really wanted to be something, and accomplish it with a light touch, but it just wasn't anything. I was hoping for more after the positive reviews I'd read.

Today I had a most wonderful movie experience. Whilst visiting my daughter in Victoria, BC, we went to the Royal British Colombia Museum's IMAX Theater's showing of 'Rocky Mountain Express' that is explained here:

I had long forgotten that the IMAX system is a Canadian invention from 1960s. Our particular theater has a 61' high by 85' wide screen (largest in BC) with 12,000 watts of audio power. Despite its many years in service, IMAX is still an impressive format.

For train buffs, especially those who worship steam locomotives like me, this movie is a must. Spectacular mountainous scenery abounds as an IMAX Camera-equipped helicopter skillfully follows a beautifully restored CPR Locomotive & its train from Vancouver through The Rockies to The Prairies.

The seating & sound in this theater is superb. This soundtrack is phenomenal but not overdone as in many productions. Before the movie starts, the large speakers behind the screen are lit up by spotlights so that they can be seen by the audience. It would take a large HT to house these beasts, ha!

After learning of the sacrifices of the toughest of our countrymen in the late 1800s who drove this railway through some of the most despicable terrain & unforgiving climate in the world, I came away with a distinct sense of pride in being a Canuck. I wonder if we would have the fortitude & resolve to accomplish this today.

So, if you have access to an IMAX Theater near you, I highly recommend this outstanding 45-minute documentary when it is showing in your region. I am eagerly awaiting the release of this DVD or Blu Ray as I imagine that it will shake a HT with authority...

I try to enjoy an IMAX movie at least once a year or so. They spoil me for all other theaters (except the one at home).

We have (uncharacteristically) watched a few rented DVD's lately.

Neither my brother-in-law nor my daughter are allowed to autonomously select titles for group viewing anymore.

50-50 - Joseph Gordon Leavitt gets spinal cancer. Hilarity does not ensue.

The Grey - Survivors of an arctic plane crash are incrementally eaten by wolves. Liam Neeson is an internally tormented badass.

Inception - Liked it. Need to see again, though. Probably won't get the chance because Julie hated it.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - I really liked it. The pace, cinematography and sound editing were worth the price of admission. I am amused by Robert Downey.

I think I have now seen every episode of The Big Bang Theory. I still enjoy it. Re-watching Arrested Development. Still working my way through Rescue Me.

Thanks for those, Tom. That's a lot of hours you can't get back. Were you wasted during any of the screenings?

We are working on Weeds now that all the newer series we were watching are in between seasons. We are into Season 3 and I am enjoying it. I like that it's not just about the main protagonist. Many of the relatives and neighbours have their own equally interesting and quirky story lines going on in parallel.

Also, Mary Louise Parker is very easy to watch. Both for her character and yes, her cuteness.

Just wait till she gets naked.

Watched a Dutch movie the other night called the 'Black Book', about an attractive Jewish singer who becomes a spy after losing her entire family to the Nazis. Based on a true story apparently, I thought it was quite a good movie.

Next up was 'Iron Man 2'. Can I have my two hours back? for an "action" movie, there was way to much filler in this one, not what I expected.

'True Grit', excellent movie and a very convincing Rooster Cogburn played by Jeff Bridges, really enjoyed it.

21 Jump Street

I thought it was entertaining. The guy playing Eric kept looking and sounding familiar, but I couldn't place him. Then I saw the name "Dave Franco" in the credits, and I thought, Ohhhhh, he must be James Franco's brother, which he is. I didn't even know James Franco had a brother in the business, but as soon as I saw "Franco," it made sense.

Certain aspects of the R-rated comedy are played out for me, so I'd actually like to see a PG-13 comedy or two come out that don't suck. But for what it is, the movie's pretty decent.

Bought season passes for and caught up on Futurama and Louie. I was disappointed to see Louie only seems to be on iTunes now and not Amazon Instant Video.

I also finally finished watching the final three episodes in the first season of The Legend of Korra, the new series based in the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender. There was some cool stuff in the story, but they haven't hit their stride yet. It took me a little while to get into Avatar: The Last Airbender, too, so I'm hoping they find their rhythm. The attempts at humor fell a little flat, which was disappointing, since there were so many genuinely funny moments in the first series. In any case, I look forward to seeing where they take the story. They obviously put time into developing the world and the characters, so it should pay off with more time.
