I currently own a 2 channel setup with Denon 2805 and two Axiom M60's. I am not sure if this speaker is upto the task for home theatre.

That or the receiver. Either of the two. Since I am within my return policy period, I was wondering if anyone who lives in the Phoenix area ( particularly easy valley Chandler/Gilbert ) would allow me to listen to their setup for comparison.

I hope this is the right place to put in this request. If not, I apologize.

Sridhar 125, can you describe why your receiver/speakers are not satisfactory for home theater? We might be able to help solve your problem right here on this forum.

Thank you for your offer of help. Here is the deal...A year back I had a Yamaha receiver(75W) with Infiniti Entra series speakers(dual woofer + tweeter). At first I just had the front floor standing speakers. Later I added the center plus surrounds making it a 5.0 system. The room at that point was L shape with listening space around 12x20x8. A fire destroyed all of that....

So in comparison, I have a now a 100W receiver (denon 2805) with 250 W rated speaker in a rectangular 15x30x9 space and I feel I am missing the low end punch much needed for home theatre. I know adding a sub. would solve that , but I did not have one earlier and that was acceptable. I played starwars(phantom menace) and the THX introduction was just not good as before and the pod race I had to go down to +5 volume on the denon for acceptable performance. I was listening to movie Drumline last night and again the same thing.

I just don't know how to describe it... I feel its lacking in punch and I am not entirely sure if I will be satisfied after adding the center and surrounds in the next few months.

That is the reason, I wanted to listen to anyone willing to share their system in this area so that I can hopefully hear what is sounds 5.0 ( as compared to my 2.0 setup). Unfortunately, I cannot listen to it in a shop..

With the M60's, is a sub mandatory for HT purposes ? I really don't want to buy one if I can avoid it.

As last resort, I might buy either a denon 3805 OR Yamaha (110W/120W) which is about the same price as my current 2805 and then compare. If I find it better then I can return the 2805 that I have. Who knows, maybe its the receiver !

Any other ideas welcome and again if anyone in phoenix area is willing to share their system with me for a while that will be great !

Well, if you so desire that low end punch you are probably gonna have to get a sub. Is there any particular reason you don't want to buy a sub? I can almost guarantee that a sub will make a bigger difference than adding 10-20 watts per channel.

I'm up in Flagstaff, if you're up for a weekend drive up the mountain I'd be glad to give you an audition. My setup includes a sub though.

Sridhar 125, I believe your not getting the same punch now like you were before because your room size has changed substantially from 1,920 to 4050 cubic feet, which will require a lot more power and/or a sub to get the same effect. Perhaps a separate two channel amp would be necessary to fill your space and give you the punch you so desire?

BTW, Sirquack and Bray also own m60's with a denon 2805. Hopefully they'll chime in here soon enough to offer some advice.

Michael's (richeydog's) point about the difference in room size is a good one. It could very well account for the lack of "punch" you are experiencing. I have the M60s with a HSU STF-2 sub in a 2500 cubic foot room, 1500 cubic feet smaller than your current room. No lack of "punch" here.

I, too, am curious as to why you don't want a sub. I don't think you are aware of what you are missing (were missing, with the other setup) without a sub in the mix. It's perfectly OK that you don't want one, but I'd just like to understand why not.

Player8, first of all, thank you for the offer. If I decide to drive up North next weekend, I will contact you for further details.

Room size is definitely a change from my apartment earlier( Acutally after your posts, I measured it and it actually measures 18x30x9 = 4860). Richeydog, how would the 2 channel amp change the denon 2805's 100W output ?

Perhaps, I did not word it correctly. Its not that I do not "want" a subwoofer, its more like its not fitting in my budget See I was planning on adding the VP150($385) and pair of QS8($500)...I also noticed the SVS 20-39, which runs $600+shipping.

Buying both is kind of a pinch currently. So, I was hoping I could manage with the center and surrounds for a while (year or so ) before adding the sub. But it seems to me that in my current situation with the larger room and the choice of M60/2805, I will be "forced" into buying the sub as well, right ?

Or should I just buy a sub making it a 2.1 system ? would the M80's have provided better lower end punch ?

I'd do the 2.1 in a heartbeat before the 5.0. In fact, that's what I've done! Currently, I have a 4.1 system.

Agreed. For HT good mains plus good sub can give you 90% of the "impact". Center and surrounds definitely help but I ran with just mains + sub for quite a while and was real happy.

With your new room you need to move maybe 150% more air to get the same "punch" you had in your old room. The M60s are just not going to be able to move enough air on their own for happy HT in a room that size, you really need a good sub. Don't be frightened, but your room is in the range where people here will start suggesting you get TWO subs if you give them half a chance.

M80s would be a bit better than M60s in that room on their own but for HT you will get far more improvement from a sub. Go with the big honkin' sub.

You know, I thought it would be a "no-no" to consider a sub before the center and surrounds, but I am glad that you guys have already tried it and you like it .

Now I am quite exited about shopping for a sub...Has anyone tried the new SVS box type 10" sub's that sell for < $400 ?
