Well, yesterday before church it was 54 outside, when church was over an Alberta clipper dipped down and the temp was down to 32....It continued to drop over night and this morning it was a balmy -1 without the windchill. Currently -31F realfeel....

Same here (of course we live in the same metropolitan area). Went to 9AM church, and it was a little above 50 F, got out of church at 10:15 AM and it was 31 according to my car's thermometer.

Took my daughter to school this morning since she had to be there a little early, and it showed -1 F in my car. I didn't even want to know the wind chill.

According to the wether folks yesterday, it was a northern cold front blowing in, so I guess that means that we can blame it on Canada!

Today in Montreal, it's +6C, which means the snow is melting on top of ice... It is a tad slippery...

And I thought this thread was going to be about employment.

4 degrees actual, -17 windchill at this time.

We've been above freezing for a couple of days, so there is a big melt going on. Driveway is water over ice, hunks of snow and ice sliding off the roof and scaring the local rodentia. The snow had condensed down to half its original depth so the snowblower was working really hard even in 6-8" of snow.

I had a double header in rec hockey last night, outdoor.

The temperature was -19F, with the wind chill it was -40F.

What is it with the temperature change and church this past Sunday? This is an excerpt from an email my uncle from Tulsa, OK sent to me last night..

"Beautiful almost clear afternoon 2:30 PM temp 75 degrees.I had gone up to the church to change the wording on the outside sign. The wind had been very strong out of the South. As I started to change the sign, the wind became calm. Just as I finished the second side of the sign, the Wind changed all of a sudden out of the North at about 25 to 30 MPH. The front hit here at 2:32 PM. By the 5 PM news time, the temp had dropped to 37. By 7 PM it has dropped to about 25 MPH with a wind chill in the teens. Thats a 50 degree drop in temp in about 2 1/2 hours. There is a little moisture in the air, sleet or snow. They are NOT predicting any accumulation. We certainly hope not."

Meanwhile, in south Florida the weather for today and the remainder of the week calls for .... uh, never mind, I really don't care to hear Mark bitching at me again today.

Rick, That is exactly what it was like here in Tulsa. I went into the grocery store for about 30 mintues and the temp dropped like 10 degrees!

Minus 3 degrees right now with minus 20 windchill. Supposed to get quite a bit lower by early morning. Then, more snow to add to the fun.

See, it isn't just going to church. Apparently going into a grocery store can cause the temperature to suddenly drop.

Habs fan here so no Joy in the Caps win for me. We are not having a bad year though. I've given up on a Stanley Cup and remain complacent that we consistently stay ahead of the Leafs.

Weather has been nuts here ever since I posted a thread about it a month ago. Only one significant snowfall and the rest of the time has been mainly plus zero(c) and rain. After the rain it seems to get just cold enough to make it freeze and become treacherous on the roads. Then it warms and rains again.

If you want an extremely interesting read on how humans are and already have effected our wether systems, read Tim Flannery's The Weather Makers .

I have read a lot of articles and books on both the effects of Global Warming and similar ones debunking it. Flannery's book describes the science in ways that will push you towards the belief side of the argument. It's the most convincing read yet because he combines the theories with science with the history of what has already happened. Most would never have any idea that there are so many millions of miles of our Earth already adversely and irreversibly effected.

The explanations of the domino effect is the particularly scary side. For instance, the melting polar ice caps resulting in more solar energy being absorbed into the earth instead of being reflected, adding to the warming effect. Also, the cold water effects on ocean currents and how the resulting older water won't help balance things because aside from the changing of weather patterns, it also magnifies the effect because it draws up literally megatons of carbon up from the ocean depths where it was once trapped in the colder bottom layers. More carbon = more global warming = more ice caps melting = colder water = more carbon =........

It also gives many sad examples of how many square miles of coral reef have already been lost due to water temp changes and how entire species have already disappeared due to just slight changes in weather.

An interesting example is a particular mountainous region whose area I can't remember at the moment. It's upper portion was almost continuously enveloped in a cool, foggy mist. A temperature change in the region of just a couple of degrees resulted in the mist layer retreating up higher towards the top of the mountains. A completely unique species of a golden forest frog was completely wiped out when it lost it's cool, damp habitat. Just 2 degrees average temperature change and an entire species lost.

A section on Australia's diminishing water supply and the measures the bigger cities have already taken is another alarming chapter. A smaller section on how Australian farmers who tried to move into less parched lands by clearing areas of vegetation, resulted in catastrophe when they realized that the vegetation was holding back tons of salt that was naturally in the soil and that this emerging salt not only made it unfarmable but it also ended up seeping into other water supplies, doubling their problems.

The real scary part is when you realize the book is already 2 years old. What else has happened?

I could ramble on for a while but it's almost the part the apart of my conference call where I actually have to pay attention.

In any case, weather you read it to believe or your read it in the spirit of trying to debunk his theories, I guarantee it's an interesting read that you can't put down.

So I've heard I hope I make it home from jury duty before it comes.

Now some of you are probably laughing at the inch or so dusting, but considering it has only snowed here 6 or 7 times in the last 45 years, and two of those times were the Winters before Hurricanes Camile and Katrina, this is a big deal, at least to those of us in the path.

Well, we got about 3" of fluffy stuff today, 1/2" of ice planned on top of that tomorrow, then blustery winds to top it off, can't wait.

It warmed up again here, was -18C when I went to work at 5PM, it is now -12C and snowing again. I haven't seen this much snow in Calgary in a very long time. New forcast for the rest of the week, -18C to -22c and snow, gotta love that climate change.

This reminds me of when I was around 13 or so, my buddies uncle built a chair for his neighbor that incorporated a lawnmower engine and a greatly shortened snowmobile track. The Rear wheels could be raised or lowered (with a lot of effort) for non-snowy surfaces, He couldn't make it steer very well at all and the owner kept turning up the governor to unsafe levels, but I'm sure with today's technology, a much better version could be crafted.

Snowing here today, but that's as it should be.

That is pretty darn cool. When my dad and a friend of his get some drinks in them they frequently talk about rigging up a plow for the front of my wheelchair. I've seen a couple videos on YouTube of people plowing snow in their wheelchairs.

-21F (-30C) is pretty freaking cold. We hit -7 here the night before last , and -4 last night. I am officially ready for spring.

Can you use like a heat gun on them to get them thawed enough to start running a trickle of water through them? I don't know, I've never had to deal with frozen pipes. Never had to deal with -21 either.

It's too freaking hot out here in CA. 70 degrees in SF in January is just wrong. And also the driest January on record so far. We're gonna be hurting bad this year as far as water goes...

Just the opposite here in IL.

I've had a heat gun on the most accessible spot in the pipe for 4 hours now.... and this was AFTER getting up every two hours overnight to run a good amount of water through the pipes. I'm watching it closely in the hopes of actually spotting the likely fire!

Cut a hole in my kitchen ceiling (110 year old plaster lathe, God I wish I had sheetrock) and found the problem: The pipes to the upstairs tubs exist in a large "open" area between the kitchen ceiling and the back porch roof. No wonder the bathtub pipes are subject to freezing.

Trying to decide, (after I presumably get water moving again) whether the problem will best be fixed by cutting a hole in the porch roof to lower someone in or taking down half my kitchen ceiling.

Did I mention frozen pipes really, really suck?

As the owner of a 99-year old house, I can sympathize. What is this sheetrock that you speak of? You mean some people don't have plaster walls?

I'd think that big hole you just made in your kitchen ceiling would start letting a lot of heat into that space. That ought to help.

The good news is that as soon as you get a trickle going, it should thaw quickly. And the resulting fire from the heat gun will certainly help too. Always look on the bright side.

I used one of those small ceramic fan heaters to keep my ceiling dry, thereby saving the drywall when my roof leaked last winter. Something you might be able to do to get some localized heat there, but these little heaters can throw out a lot of heat so be careful where you place them.

Although there are three places where I'm subject to frozen pipes, the worst has always been the 2nd floor tub. Unfortunately, it has the type of single-control valve where if you put it on a trickle you'd only get cold water through, not hot, and both have been subject to freezing.

Usually, my only choice has been whether or not I need to get up in the night (to run the water for several minutes) once, twice, three times, or every two hours. I don't usually have a problem till it's -5° or so... last night (and tonight) are well past that...

Presently 48F, 9C up here.

I HATE frozen pipes. My old house had a bad habit of this.

If it's of any consolation to you Mark, it's -20 here today also but it is -30 with the wind chill factored in. Barely a breeze too, if it starts to blow it will get nasty.

Well the pipe unfroze without any breaks (as far as I can tell).

I'm exhausted after what must have been 60 trips from the basement to the second floor and back. My kitchen is full of pieces of plaster, wood, and loose-fill insulation...I hadn't cleaned it yet in case I ended up cutting more.

Still sucks, but it would have been worse if a pipe had burst obviously....

Glad to hear the pipes didn't burst. Mine froze up yesterday morning. We had -18 yesterday and today. It's -15 right now. Wind chills to -45 at times. Too damn cold for me.

Mark, so sorry to hear about your frozen pipe but happy you resolved the situation with a minimum of deconstruction. I'm a bit worried about my pipes cuz I'm currently vactioning in sunny, warm, beautiful Palm Desert, California. I keep track of the contrast between Cleveland's weather and Palm Desert's.



Just a slight difference in current conditions. I see that Palm Desert is expecting a high of 75 today, while Cleveland will be 70 degrees cooler

Your dog is one lucky dog. I'm pretty tolerant of the cold and no way am I taking mine for a stroll at -52 wind chill. Come to think of it, maybe the dog isn't so lucky at all??? heh heh.

I know that I certainly wouldn't want to...ahem...do my business in -52. Uh, brrrr.

I hope our nice weather sticks around a little longer, that is our snow removal and the residential roads really need it right now.

Amen to that. The "city" here is essentially bankrupt (financially and morally) and has never really believed in plowing. It's supposed to be one tomorrow and +3 Sunday/Monday. Hopefully enough of the ice melts and disappears before we drop back down Tuesday.

It was certainly awesome last week when it finally went up to a very reasonable -17 and we could walk around without toques. Like going from HTiB to Epic 60. Getting into the plusses only fees like going from M22s to M80s: really nice, but not quite as dramatic.

I noticed along with these crappy temps that it is also very dry here. My humidifier is having a hard time keeping it at 45% humidity in here.

Only borrowing it. 79F(H) 48F(L) today, I promise we’ll give some back in a couple months.

I had to turn on the AC for a couple of hours this afternoon because the AV equipment made the room hotter than just opening the door could cope with.
