Ha ha, after the Rasputina album I went in alphabetical order by artist. But even then, Regina's albums wouldn't be at the top of my list. I love her, and I love specific songs, but I don't think she's made her perfect album yet.

She has yet to make her "Ode to CV" double album.

I think she's said she doesn't do concept albums, or at least the way she writes songs hasn't allowed her to yet, but that's quite a concept, Sean.

'Couldn't Stand The Weather' was an excellent album also.

Zimm - I liked Van Hagar as well and 5150 and OU812 were perhaps the best of them. Like you I saw Van Halen on tour for 1984 and it stuck with me. The album reminds me of some great times, always crank it up when I hear songs on the radio, especially at home

Ok, I'll admit it too then...we seem to have a group of us here. I prefer Van Hagar. I played OU812 over and over again. The older stuff is ok, but I think it gets so overplayed on radio around here that I'm tired of it and wish they would play more Van Hagar era stuff instead.

I had forgotten Rage Against the Machine, that deserves a spot in the top ten just for breaking so many of the rules and being timeless. It's derivative, Audioslave, also made two very good albums (and one bad one).

For all the VH fans, after my confession of Hagar, I pulled out Van Halen's self titled disk and played it on the way to drop the kids off at school this morning. Surprise, surprise, they loved it. Didn't take them long to catch on to the chorus. Thank goodness for double-entendre, the Ice Cream Man sounds so nice!

The Grinch?!? Good call. And yes, OU812 should have gone down as a watershed event. But they tried to go "old school" after that. To me, they just sounded old and reaching as they tried to get harder as they got older. OU812 had a mature sound they could have rolled forward with. Oh well, not the first or the last to fade away.

Didn't know Boris Kharloff sung "The Grinch", wow! Zimm, I think there's a lot of 'youngsters' out there who have never heard anything other than the Pop, Rap and Hip-Hop forced on them by the music industry these days. I'm hopefull though. Every once in a while I'm surprised like the other day I'm looking at some music Dvd's at the local W'Mrt and I see a couple of 14'ish kids pick up a Zeppelin Dvd and one says to the other, " that Jimmy Page is an awesome guitar player".

Have to add a couple more Canuckians to my list, "Up to Here" and " Fully Completely" by The Tragically Hip as well as "Love Junk" by The Pursuit of Happiness (TPOH). Don't know the name of any Gordon Lightfoot albums offhand but I like a lot of his songs...the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown, If You Could Read my Mind, Canadian Railroad Trilogy ect.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are doing wonders for introducing the youngsters to some great old time rock.

You should give Rage Against the Machine a try, I think you will like it. How did you take to Audioslave?

I had not thought of that - not a player of those games. Very interesting. It is amazing the subtlety that even the likes of David Lee Roth or Axle Rose could pull off when forced to by the Gores. Now, there is no mystery; I know exactly what JZ did with that girl "with the boots with the fur".

I really enjoyed Audioslave and still listen to them quite frequently: their live in Cuba DVD is pretty cool. I also love The Nightwatchman, I've seen him live in Toronto (rocking show)and I was only a couple feet away from him waving my Che wall flag!! Zacks solo stuff "One Day as a Lion" is wicked also, especially the song Wild International.

'Classic Rock' still has a large following with the 'kids' today. Led Zeppelin still sells around a million disks a year and AC/DC has a big following in that crowd.

Agreed, Fred, and as Jay said I think with Guitar Hero ect. they are being introduced to music that they would otherwise not know. Saw an interview with Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee saying the exact same thing and are gaining a whole new legion of fans. Of course, they are still releasing new material once in a while, which helps too. It's unfortunate that the companies which make up the "music" industry these days, is more interested in promoting "celebrity" than real talent IMHO.

I can't say I like the Hip, I have a bit of the opposite feeling about them truthfully... but TPOH's Love Junk and the less angsty One Sided Story are both really good albums. (Also for the readers - Moe Berg's The Green Room is a good collection of short stories, although the (romantic?) subject content can border on the odd).

Leonard Cohen needs a mention in the CanCon section as well.

Zimm, I don't think Guns n Roses or Metallica were ever or could ever be classes as spandex bands. Motley Crue? Oh yes.

Axle had his time in spandex, just before the leather pants got the nod. Guns were groupies of Motley. When Motley went to leather (more like pleather) for Shout at the Devil, Guns followed suit. But pictures exist, I'm sure of it! Sounds like howework for the weekend for me!

Update: that did not take long: Ax ;Axle wore spandex biking shorts for a whole tour; and some Axl in your face

Further update: I'm proud (as a fan) to say I can find no semi-credible source to support my baseless accusation that Metallica once wore spandex.

In the same way that the most rabid anti-smokers are former smokers, the people that make the cheapest shots against bad metal bands are those who once listened to similar bands.

I worked in a Disco in Banff the year that album came out. There was some real bad music there for a few years, but the Bee Bees put out a lot of good music.

Everyone likes to make fun of Disco, but I hear the thump thump boompa boompa rythms of disco in a surprising number of recent stuff.

I also remember the night a really hot woman with 6" heals put one of them through the dance floor doing some 'cool disco moves'. Life was good.

Most people think of Tubullar Bells re Mike Oldfield, but I have to say that I preferred Ommadawn a little more. Both were excellent albums though, Mike was one of those musical geniuses. Hey, but now we've got Fat Boy What's-his-name, it's all good!!!

I never listened to Ommadawn, Just Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge. I see he released another disk late last year. Apparently its popular in classical circles in the UK.

The guy could (and did) play almost 40 different instruments! I always found that amazing.

I'm having a horrible time building a list. Every time I think I have it nailed, somebody adds in an "Oh Ya, I forgot about that one." I listened to way to many different kinds of music to do an 'all genres open' list.

I'm a day late on this semi-hijack but I'll be one of those lurking metal 80 metal heads who come out to defend themselves. Since I believe in making fun of everyone equally, I'll only throw out one defensive comment because despite my love of the music back then, even then deep inside, I knew spandex was wrong.

Say what you will about Motley Crue (and you can safely say quiet a lot.) They had a big influence on the industry in the 80s. In an age when radio was being dominated by the new 'wear your pastel colored sweater hanging over your shoulders' pop, they brought back punk disguised as metal. A badly needed alternative for those of us sickened by the repetitiveness monotony of the radio playlists of the day. If it wasn't sweater pop, it was an extended dance remix of a sweater pop song.

Actually, there was tons of good, diverse music back then but at least where I lived, if you wanted to hear it, you had to go out and buy it.

Murph, I agree about the Spandex AND some of the hair bands.

It WAS over the top, and I really wasn't into it too much back then, but I have to admit a certain nostalgia for it today. Cranking up a best-of Motley Crue or Poison disc is just fun.

As with most things in life, if you don't take it too serious you can't make a big deal out of it. Live and Let Live. Kumbaya, and all that sh_t.

The 80s had it's fair share of 'cheese' but there was also a lot of bands that peaked back in the 80s...Dire Straits, ZZtop, Rush, Springstein, U2, Van Halen....haven't had my coffee yet so the two active brain cells haven't kicked in yet....loads of other good bands despite the recyleable pop stuff.

I'm sorry, but Van Halen is the very definition of recyclable pop. Yes, I own two albums. Yes, it's kinda fun. But it's hard rock bubblegum.

Well, I didn't mind some of their early stuff. I guess they didn't really branch out too much musicianship-wise, but you could easily make the same argument for AC/DC. Alot of their songs are so similar, you forget which song you're listening to. Hey, they peaked in the 80s too!!

Coincidentally, just before Christmas, I picked up a friends copy of "The Heroin Diaries" by Nicki Sixx (The 'twice clinically dead' bass player & songwriter for Motley Crue.)

I normally would NEVER read a celebrities biography but I actually went out and bought my own copy to finish reading it after being unable to put it down at his place.

It wasn't AT ALL what I expected. The artwork and color disguise an extremely serious publication. He has put in print all the diaries he wrote while being hooked on heroin, among many other things. It has the usual commentaries from band mates and friends but the diaries and his own commentaries pull no punches. His addiction, his depression, a building total reclusion from society, the effects on his body, his extreme delusions and paranoia, even his criminal activities are all there without any attempt to make it pretty, justify it or glamorize it. Definitely not for the feint of heart or weak stomached.

I'm totally shocked. It's a must read for anyone who has experienced a severe addiction or friends and family with severe addictions. Also, he is donating proceeds from the sales to his street kid charity, so buy it, don't borrow.

Axiom forum tie in........... The accompanying soundtrack for the book (same Name) is actually an excellent CD although Crue fans will be disappointed by it's mostly mellow nature.

They were just one band that I couldn't get into... and I never understood exactly why, I've narrowed it down to...

They play hard rock/heavy metal - check
The makeup is no worse than Twisted Sister's - check
Okay, they wear spandex, so does Iron Maiden - check
In pictures, they always seem to do the pumped fist, so does Billy Idol - check
Also, they make those kissy faces in all the pictures - Ohhhh... that's why!!

I bought the new Crue album, and they included a bit of the Sixx book. It was pretty wild and I meant to find the book. I have to admit, I had minimal expectations for the new Motley effort, but I actually enjoy it in short bursts. It will work your sub with a relentless bass guitar attack. The fun thing is that it contains nothing but songs about life in the 80's and 90's as one of the worlds most aggressive bands. As Ozzy said, "People think I was crazy because I bit the head off a bat, but those MF'ers were insane." The songs, like the Nikki Sixx book tell the tale. A fun romp down dead brain cell lane for any old fans.

I leave you guys for a few hours and you start going on about mousetraps, steroids in the gibblies ?

Omadawn has some great parts, but to me it drags a bit.
