I love World Music and it's cousin Folk Music.

A short while ago i heard a few pieces of music on Galaxie's World Music on TV that really impressed me, so much so that i now have the whole collection of about 20 cd's.

if anyone is interested, those albums listed below are an excellent introduction to unusual (and striking) music from Ethiopia at the time of Haile Selassie, called The Golden Years of Ethiopian Music:

Ethiopiques - The Very Best Of Ethiopiques-cd1
Ethiopiques - The Very Best Of Ethiopiques-cd2
ETHIOPIQUES - Vol.01 - Golden Years of Ethiopian Music 1969-1975
ETHIOPIQUES - Vol.03 - Golden Years of Modern Ethiopian Music '69-'75

Thanks, J.B.. I will check them out.

I very much enjoy listening to the world renowned Zulu tribal choral group "Ladysmith Black Mambazo".

i've heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo before, but it's fuzzy in my mind at the moment; i'll give it a listen.
thanks. :-)

Careful, there, you fickle little revolution monger. You're gonna get RATM really pissed at you.

Fickle....hmmmmmmm.....

Anyway, it's funny you mentioned that, Bob. When I posted that message, I honestly thought that Rage wouldn't be playing with them any time soon smile.

I think the word, "World Music," is, in itself, funny and telling.

It's so arrogant and dismissive. There's "our" music, and then there's the rest of the world, in one amporphous lump.

We really mean "3rd world music," but I guess we have to hold on to some semblance of PC.

Is Russian R & R world music? Is Syrian disco?

Must it include 4th and 6th interval harmonies and contrapusto rhythms created with cast off petroleum equipment, 1/2 empty cereal boxes or kitchen implements. Are western instruments employed and played "incorrectly?" Do people wear native dress when they do it? Are the lyrics ever subtitled? Are we "world music" to "them?" Have they ever topped the charts in Angola? Does any of their music require electicity? Or clean water? Or food?
Can you even play a stringed intrument with your 11 (surviving) children draped all over you?

Will you be inspired to write a song about how good the family dog tasted? Are you doing only what your govenment will tolerate (unlike highly illegal rock bands in Iran)? Is your lablel run by rich white people in an industrialzed nation thousand of miles away? Who does your demographic marketing research? Is all World Music dissemination viral, or is that merely the disease status of the players?

Are they in any danger of being co-opted by Paul Simon, David Byrne or Peter Gabriel? If so, are they paid scale, or do they get royalties?

Can you coerce a hairy yak into a recording studio?
Will her contract demand readily available bowls of M & M's with all the brown ones removed (like Diana Ross does)?

Does anyone w/o a college degree listen to it, or even know that it exists? Can I get it @ WalMart or Target?

And where the hell is Miriam Makeba now?

BTW, what ever happened to those two hot women who fronted the Russian band, tatu. They used to make out during performances. If I thought that was exciting, you guys must have been in an absolute froth.

Yeah, but it was World Music so it didn't count.

Aw, c'mon, Ken. You know that's not true. They're all for sale to yuppie and gay couples in America. Well, except for the ones who have to make the soccer balls. Oh, wait! That's Pakistan.

World music. That phrase just means that they are a part of the world, but we aren't. See? Problem solved.

Nicely ranted, Bob.

i've wondered before what north american music could be called world music; i haven't researched it, but i haven't been able to say once: "hey! this IS world music"

thinking about it a bit more, i now think that Lhasa was making world music; that means there surely is more; but what?

I'll cop to the "bombastic," but rants are impassioned (for real). Mine are faked passion, meant to elicit equally fake "passionate" responses.

If they can be called rants at all, then they are jocular rants--a pinch of what I may (or may not) really think, a dash of the absurd, heavy on hyberbole, and, ultimately, as shockingly dismissive, uncaring, detached and rude as I can muster.

I don't care what anyone thinks, I believe I'm very, very adedpt at dismissive, uncaring, detached and rude. And if you think it comes without dedication, copious study, and hard work, you'd be mistaken. Then again, I'm probably exaggerating.

The term "3rd world" really bothers me. If anything, what's commonly referred to as the 3rd world, should be called the 1st. It is, after all, where humans descended from.

1st should bother you, too, since it's like saying it's only v1.0.

Really!?! You!?! You're gonna try to trump global economics and politics with evolution?!?

When the term (3rd world) came into use, there were no countries designated 1st world, as such, though it was understood that it meant "economically established." There was only one country considered by some to be 2nd world---The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

On the out-of-Africa theory of human evolution and worldwide habitat; no Africa = no R & R, no jazz and no dashikis, among tons of other things. Boliva is 3rd world. Maybe your ancestors fell of a Vicuna, but I'm pretty sure mine didn't.

I've seen Vicunas and met your lovely parents. Shame on you.

So, mashing up CV's logic with BobKay's historical anecdotes, we can only conclude that Garbage's "Version 2.0" is from Russia with buzz.

Thank god! For a second there I thought you had absorbed Cam's personality and had gone this forum's version of postal.

If the Borg ever invade earth I say we send them Bob to assimilate. They'll never know what hit 'em...

I swear, sometimes I think Bob is actually one of my (and Peter's) old housemates. We could never tell when he was telling the truth, either. But he was a hell of a lot of fun.

If I had one ounce of cute or cuddly in me, I would post, like, 5 smiley faces.

"If they ever come to destroy the earth
They'll have to go through you first
(Bet they won't be expecting that)
When they finally come to destroy the earth
They'll have to deal with you first
(and my money says they won't know about)
The thousand Fahrenheit hot metal lights behind your eyes

You're invincible!"

Good 'ol Jim. I was just thinking about his a couple weeks ago on our road trip when I saw an Amtrak train paralleling the highway for a while.

Perhaps ethnic or traditional music are better descriptions.
