GRRRR.
Came to the living room this morning and found my right m80 laying over on the corner of my ep500 thanks to my wonderful cat. I am so mad right now I don't even know where to begin. Trying to decide what to do now..... AHHHHHH! See photos below.............

I am sooooooooooooooooooooo FREAKING ANGRY!
Posted By: BobKay Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/03/11 02:56 PM
David, that can be fixed. If you were closer, I'd do it for you. A furniture restorer could do it. It may not end up completely invisible, but it could be sooooo minimized that no one would ever notice it, 'cept you.

Also, cats can be fricasseed. Peruvian purple potatoes make a great side dish, I hear.

which do you love more, cat or M80?

a good place for a cat is free life on a farm, if you haven't thought of that.

We had a cat once in the early 80s, it sprayed on my sub (M&K) once. It went flying out the car window near an old farm house that had a chit load of them. No worries cat lovers, I slowed down LOL.

a suggestion that might prevent the cat from touching the speakers again;
when you see the cat interested in the speakers and he's coming near, play a sudden blast of 50Hz sound, like some dance music beat.
do that only when the cat goes near.
it should not take much time to be an effective deterrent.

After listening to my axioms I must say that I am not as angry about the damage. They still have the same calming ability as they did before the incident smile

Definitely a bummer and I will look into some type of furniture services to see if they can actually repair vinyl in some way.

I'm sure the farmers in your area are greatful for all those cats and dogs folks keep tossing out...

If you don't want a pet, find a home for it or have it put down.

I made up with my cat but made it promise not to do it again or else...

Still hopeful it can be fixed (at least made to look better).

One of my friends had two cats fighting behind his reel-to-reel tape deck, which was mounted on a shelf about 5 feet off the ground. Tape deck, meet floor. Floor, meet tape deck.

After he cooled off a bit, he grabbed the offending cats and walked about a 1/4 mile into the town's general store, kicked the door open, and yelled "who wants a cat ??". Fortunately the town cat lady was in getting groceries (and presumably cat food) so there was a happy ending and the cats did not end up as something like sweet & sour chicken balls.

Sorry to hear about the damage to your speakers. The subwoofer should fix up fairly easily though; the M80 will be tougher to get perfect but I doubt anyone looks at the sides anyways (or more people would realize how freakin' big M80s really are).

Might be worth checking with Axiom to see if you can get a piece of vinyl to cover the ding in the side of the M80 after filling it. You could cut a piece from the back and nobody would ever know but doing it would hurt too much.

I'm thinking plastic wood plus a bit of vinyl cut off someone else's Axioms when they're not looking wink

I say you take some dog clippers and give the cat a matching ding. Then threaten to complete the job if he tips over the 80's again. Just sayin'

It's funny, I was just thinking the exact same thing. Patch the damage on each speaker with a little bit of cat fur "pour encourager les autres".
Posted By: J. B. Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/03/11 05:27 PM
i think it should be "pour décourager les autres", so they will not be inclined to do it again...

right?
Posted By: bridgman Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/03/11 05:38 PM
Strictly speaking, yes. IIRC the original use of the phrase was to "encourage other admirals to try harder" but over time the usage seems to have been broadened to a more general "as a warning to others".

Opinion seems to be divided as to which interpretation is correct, but I agree that your interpretation seems right.

The thread was already heading towards "little cat heads on little cat pikes" and I didn't want to "encourager" that line of thinking too much wink
Posted By: J. B. Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/03/11 06:01 PM
i understand your point of view.

then you could also have written: pour encourager les autres à ne pas faire de même.
Posted By: bridgman Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/03/11 08:24 PM
Not without help wink
Posted By: CatBrat Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/03/11 11:22 PM
For the future, spray, or rub, something that the cat doesn't like the smell of.... For me, that would probably be deoderant. You ought to see her run when I put that on. (It's not the spray type either.) Vinegar might work. Anything the cat can't stand the smell of.

I don't know how to keep cat from jumping on top of them though. There might be "something" I haven't thought of that would sit on top of them that would't vibrate off easily. I have a big rubber rat that makes shreiking noises when you squeeze it. Cat can't stand it. Might work for me.

The truth is; I took it to my Grandmothers farm. I truly wouldn't be so cruel as to really toss it out a moving car.

Nice comment Bob.

Sorry for the rant Rick. I grew up on a farm and many people do dump their pets without a second thought.

That's OK Fred, no problem. I can understand.

Try having your teenage daughter's friends screwing around in your theater and they knock over your front speaker... so you tell them to behave only to catch the guy holding the girl under her arms and spinning around right as they knock into the other front speaker and knock it over into the center channel. All three speakers have dings on them plus the velvet boarder or my Criterion Carada screen got a cut into it. All because of two kids that could behave.

I remember your post about that nick. What a bummer frown
Posted By: bridgman Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/05/11 05:45 AM
If they were your teenage daughter's friends I guess you couldn't really drive out to the county and throw them through the window.

Unless you had really big windows. Otherwise they wouldn't fit.

Minivan. The Town and Country we have (rental) has roll down windows on the sliding doors. They're plenty big to shove a teenager out.

Rick, thanks for the clarification. I just couldn't go down easy on domestic animal pitching. The only living things that are OK to throw around are midgets.

Makes me want in-cabinet speakers mounted behind the screen even more.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: My cat F@$*ed up my speakers! - 09/06/11 04:18 AM
So you can hide midgets in 'em?

Hmmmm. Don't give me any ideas.

I had a friend - haven't seen in years....one of his favorite sayings is "There's only two types of pets....Dogs...and Targets...." just sayin.

I'm thinking about taking a stab at repair myself. I haven't got much of a response from most of the furniture repair places I have contacted so far. I was looking at the black epoxy stick on this page:

http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=113

I'm thinking if I carefully fill the gouge with this stuff and then maybe do some little grey paint streaks using some artists paint and a toothpick or something I can fix the speaker. Probably out of luck on the ep500 corner but I could try to build it back up.
