Has anybody seen this yet? While I can't say it's an enjoyable movie to watch, it has got to be the best movie I have ever seen. It was very hard to watch, and downright frightening at times.

The scary thing, though, is that it is true.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Passion - 02/26/04 06:01 AM
DJ,

True? Without dipping too far into the religion pool, I'd like to say that everything surrounding that event is subject to interpretation. Mel Gibson's version of the story is tied very closely to his personal beliefs, which are ulta-conservative Catholic.

That said, I'm interested in seeing the movie but will wait until my friend (a theater employee) can get me in free as I'd rather not pay for it.
Posted By: FordPrefect Re: Passion - 02/26/04 12:36 PM
I find it very strange that a lot of the people who were shocked at the Super Bowl breast shot are now planning on taking their children to watch a movie thats rated 'R' due to extreme violence.

Well said Ford. That's all I'm going to contribute to this thread. I'll get myself in waaaaaay too much trouble.

We were ALL in waaaaaay too much trouble before this real event took place some 2000 years ago. The Passion of the Christ movie is simply using the media available today to more boldly portray those events. If you think the movie has taken any liberty with the events that occurred, try what many people do, READ THE BOOK.

today on my way to school, riding in my yellow chariot. we passed by a couple people on the side of the road with big signs that says something like PASSION OF THE CHRIST. WANT THE TRUTH?

i havent seen it and dont know much about it but its the first time ive ever seen people waving signs about a movie so it must be pretty controversial. Of course it sounds like its on a sensitive subject though.

Audiobob,

Please please please -- no witnessing! This is not the place.

Thank you.

BTW, Which book (of the Bible) contains the "most correct" version of the Passion story?
Posted By: Monstermile Re: Passion - 02/27/04 01:44 PM
I don't think I am going to see it. I already know how it ends.

Sorry I couldn't resist.
Posted By: jtmccoy Re: Passion - 02/27/04 04:30 PM
All I'll say is I've been hearing on the radio about people who are taking their 5-year-old kids to see it. I don't care what faith you may have, if you're taking a 5-year-old to see this, you're a sicko! I saw this movie and thought it was well done, but it is the goriest, most explicity violent movie I've ever seen. It should be NC-17, not R.

Tom & Spiffnme, i'm siding with you...no comment. I'd hate to turn this thread into a religious debate - it's a lot like politics, probably better left to other forums.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Passion - 02/27/04 06:55 PM
jt - LOL. Nope. No good can come from it. The topics of money, politics and religion are enemies of civil discourse. Right now, I really like all of you, and nobody has publicly expressed any ill will towards me lately. To quote that scholar from the 70's - that's the way, un huh un huh, I like it.

On another board I inhabit, but visit less frequently than this one due to my current fixation on HT, some smart guy started a thread called "Ignore this thread". It resulted in hundreds of replies and thousands of views.

Maybe if we all start talking about how much we love the VP150, tony will self-perpetuate this thread for a couple weeks.

Has anybody seen anything they LIKE lately? I commented to my wife after a recent gruesome string of miserable Netflix offerings, that maybe I just don't like movies after all.

Not that I want to hijack this thread into something fun or anything.

Seen anything I LIKE lately?

After pondering that question, I realized that since I got the speakers, the last month has been a non-stop love fest with re-listening to my CDs and re-watching my DVDs. Pretty much everything I have seen lately I like, even more so now that I can hear all that it is to offer.

I'm not even sure what is available to go and see at the local theater right now. I may be diverted even a bit longer since I have found out that the county library system has over 5000 DVD titles available. I didn't know that until last week. This weekend will be devoted to an 8 hour marathon with the extended versions of the first 2 LOTR movies.

I guess in keeping with the original subject matter of this thread, I am worshipping at the altar of Axiom and SVS right now. With the addition of the SVS, I'm kind of like that Circuit City commercial - "So, do you have any movies where things blow up?"

It also appears that I am a co-conspirator in a thread hijacking. At lease I hope I am.

I actually just bought the season1/2 of the Family Guy a week ago so I've been immersed in that. I'll tell you, I was never able to 'get into' it when it was on TV, but after watching it I can't figure out why. It has to be the mostly intelligently written comedy since Seinfeld left the airwaves (well maybe some earlier Simpsons too). They're alot like South Park in the way they refuse to pull punches. Recommended for anyone with a sick sense of humour.

Its by the director of Glengarry Glen Ross

Excellent tips, everyone! I thank you!!

Completing our viewing of the "Sopranos" DVD collection left us seriously depressed. We tried to like "Sex and the City", but just could not get in the groove. We like "Raymond", too, except are currently wondering whether their increased attention to the children this year indicates Jumping the Shark.

I really like being able to get quality series TV on DVD - it allows for "smaller bites" of viewing, and a longer relationship with the characters.

I was addicted to 24, but I'm Tivoless, and have missed too many episodes this year. When they release Day 3 on DVD, I'm there.

I'll check out the Family Guy. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Yeah, I've been watching the repeats of it on Comedy Central, and half the time I just sit there wondering how the hell they managed to get stuff like that on TV. Fantastic show, even if I do get a bit sick of Peter every 2 episodes or so.

Posted By: Ray3 Re: Passion - 02/27/04 11:12 PM
Aha! This thread is now firmly in the hands of hijackers.

Wayne, we need to be clear about something - and I can speak to this with GREAT authority, everybody DOES NOT love Raymond!

I have just finished plowing through 5 seasons of my favorite - Stargate SG-1. Season 6 has been pre-ordered and will be delivered in mid-March, but I am ready to re-start the journey.

I'm finding that my DVD collection is centering around things that I really want to watch more than once. The Rock, Hunt For Red October, Indiana Jones Trilogy and the like.

As an aside, I stumbled across some DVDs called "The Criterion Collection". Short description is that these folks remaster old classics and give incredible results. They run from $50 to $100 each. I saw their version of "Spartacus" and it was stunning.

This whole HT thing has seriously broadened the ability to deeply enjoy movies and music. Remember when there were only B&W TVs? I don't remember myself; my grandmother told me about them. Can you imagine developments over the next 10, 15, 20 years (and the cost of upgrading)?
Posted By: fhw Re: Passion - 02/28/04 01:24 AM
If you want a quality TV show to buy on DVD, Six Feet Under is a must-own. Get a hold of the pilot episode to see if it's your cup of tea. IMHO, it's the best pilot for a TV series I've ever seen by a country mile, and the rest of the series is just as compelling.

With regards to the rest of this thread, I'll go past "no comment" and say that debating the content of this movie has no place on this kind of forum.

fhw,

Six Feet Under is the best show on TV, IMO. It's the main reason I have DirecTV with HBO right now. You see, I used to get HBO for free after a cable repair man fixed by cable a little bit too well one year. I got hooked on the show during this extended free preview.

When Comcast bought out AT&T Cable, I guess they noticed this mistake and I stopped getting HBO. My wife made me fix that problem, so I dropped standard cable, got DirecTV w/Tivo and HBO and we haven't looked back since.
Posted By: BigWill Re: Passion - 02/28/04 05:38 AM
My wife really liked that Six Feet Under show, but I'm not fond of it. Reminded me of all the creepy stuff I used to think about in high school.

Six Feet Under

The quality of HBO series is impressive....may 'cause of the creative freedom given to the producing unit......

I have started to like Curb ur entu...quiet hillarious, and from Mar7th , Hell hath no fury, the family will b back!!!

Did anyone watch the promo for the new soprano's season, the crescendo of music and the events shown reach a summit, every thing stops with tony on a chiar smoking a cigar......man what editing

How could I forget Trailer Park Boys?
Posted By: fhw Re: Passion - 02/29/04 12:51 AM
I've heard/read a bunch of interviews explaining why HBO shows are of such high quality.

First and foremost, because HBO doesn't compete for advertising dollars, they can afford to gamble airtime on a show that might catch on through word of mouth rather than mountains of hype. Six Feet Under or The Sopranos would never last past a first season on a network, because the shows are an acquired taste with complex characters and story arcs (forgetting for a moment both shows are filthy at times)...advertisers are more likely to play it safe with another Law and Order, because they know will do decently in the ratings, if not spectacularly. The system is truly broken, because shows like Cheers or Seinfeld, which tanked horribly in their first seasons, would get axed for lousy ratings out of the gate nowadays.

Secondly, HBO makes a simple demand of its drama producers...characters don't have to be likeable, as long as they're compelling. You're never given the chance to dislike a character on a network show, unless you're supposed to. Contrast that to Beecher from Oz, Tony Soprano, or Nate Fisher...there are times you love them, and times they're totally scum of the earth.

Of course, there is a bit of an unfair advantage in that HBO shows don't have to adhere to censorship. However, networks have gone overboard and sterilized a lot of their shows. Compare the first two seasons of L&O to now. If I were an ignorant foreigner (being Canadian, I suppose I am), I would think that poverty and drugs are no longer problems in New York, because the only people that ever get murdered anymore are multi-millionaires living around Park Ave.

The true solution would be a system where networks don't force providers to charge exorbitant prices for utter garbage, before a subscriber is allowed to order HBO (i.e. you can't order pay TV without full-tier cable, no matter how little of it you actually watch)...at least this is the case in Canada. Of course, given who's in control, it'll never happen.
Posted By: Zarak Re: Passion - 02/29/04 10:01 PM
Supposedly there have been some discussions about cable companies allowing people to pick and choose what channels they want, and get them ala carte. I'd love to see it, because I could get by with under 10 channels if I could pick which ones they were. Most of it is junk I don't ever watch.

I'll believe it when I see it though.
Posted By: getoffb Re: Passion - 02/29/04 10:17 PM
That would be great if I could pick the channels that I watch and only pay for them. I don't see it happening though any time soon. But it sure would be nice.
Posted By: mhorgel Re: Passion - 03/01/04 02:48 AM
I am totally addicted...but I can never catch it when it's on! I usually wait until the DVD's come out. About 2 weeks before the DVD for Season 2 came out, they had a free DVD at Best Buy with the first 2 episodes on it. What a marketing tool! Is there anybody who could watch those 2 episodes and not be hooked? Oh my god...Kiefer Sutherland shot that guy and took his head away in a duffel bag!

I call it "Twentycrack"

You guys can still catch it Sunday through Thursday on Cartoon network during adult swim. I TiVo it every night, and watch it religiously when I get home from work or on the weekends.

Definitely a keeper. Cartoon network has already purchased the syndication rights to the new episodes, which means that after Fox gets first run, Cartoon network will be able to show them on Adult Swim.

Goes to show what DVD can do to prove fan loyalty, and actually have an effect on the market - moreso than Nielsen - which I wam still puzzled about. I don't know a single "Nielsen family." I know they're supposed to keep it a secret, but wouldn't those friends haev special TV tuner boxes at least. Sorry, off-off topic....

Anyway - great show. Can't wait for new episodes.

for Canadians, try Teletoon, Mon-Fri @ 8&10 (good ole prairie time). I can hardly wait for new episodes too, I've watched each one probably a dozen times.
