Just got my Yammie DVD-C750.

I have confirmed that it plays DVDs, CDs, and SACDs. Woo.

I mean, it lifted bloated veils and gave me fat shimmering highs. Wait...

Basically, I'm happy that it appears to have random play to some degree on CDs (and kinda not really on SACDs), and it saves location on up to 10 discs. Also, the remote is much better than I expected--fairly ergonomic, and pretty responsive, when I'm not trying to fire it through a Kleenex box.

Picture seems just fine, but c'mon--I've got an old 27" CRT.

I did have some fun with cabling. I decided to use my big fat Radio Shack ultrapremium mondo cables for the fronts and center, and cheapo cable for everything else--it's what I had handy! However, when I put in DSOTM yesterday, I noticed that I wasn't exactly getting sound out of the fronts, center or subwoofer. Turns out the rat shack cables have connectors that are too tight. I didn't even realize that I hadn't gotten them fully connected! So I pulled out that cable, and used the cheap pos that came with the changer. Worked just fine...

So anyway, I'm thinking about getting a set of composite and a set of component cables from Monoprice and just using those (for the 6 channel audio), but I have to find out--are the connectors absurdly tight?

Also, if anyone has an H/K 525 and is using it with a DVD-A/SACD unit, how do you set up bass management? The manual says the H/K's crossover is still active, but I can't set it, and can't confirm that it is. I don't want to live with a 120 Hz crossover!

Ramble ramble ramble ramble...

Ken, congratulations on finally getting the new player that you've been torturing over. As far as the 525's bass management for DVD-A/SACD, the only tricky point appears to be that when you've selected the 6 channel direct inputs you have to select the 6 channel DVD-Audio setting rather than 6 channel direct, so that the ADC is in the circuit and allows for digital bass management.

Yeah, this player doesn't have all the features I wanted, but what I want doesn't exist. And it's much better to have most of what I wanted than none of what I wanted. So novel to be able to pause a CD without getting up from the couch and walking over to the entertainment center...

Figured out the DVD-Audio thingie this afternoon. Thanks for checking on it for me, though. The manual that I've got only mentions 8-Channel DVD-Audio mode, not 6-Channel DVD-Audio mode.

What's your thoughts on the Monoprice cables? I know you're rather fond of them.

Yeah, I said 6, but I don't really remember if it said 6, 8 or 6/8, but it doesn't make any difference.

Sure, the MonoPrice reports have been almost unanimously favorable. Another outfit with good prices is Total Signal .

I think I'll probably go with monoprice, as soon as they get the rest of the cables I want back in stock. Then I can redo all of the cabling in the entertainment center at once. And label it better...

Ken,

Here's to no more bloated veils (that might make a good name for an all-girl punk band. . .). Have fun with your new changer.

I'm still using the H/K 525 and the bass management on that is versatile, as you've likely discovered. You can set individual crossover frequencies for each speaker or for the 8-channel inputs.

Just be sure to set the Yammie's internal bass management so everything is large and let the H/K do the filtering and distance stuff.

That's exactly what I'm doing, although I have had to boost the bass all the way on the Yammie to get anything noticeable out of it for SACD.

kcarlile,

That's odd. Sometimes SACD producers don't mix a subwoofer channel (I have one SACD that is just four channels) but that still wouldn't explain why you're not getting bass, unless the original source recording has little or no deep bass.

Eh, I could be overstating. But I did have to bump it fairly significantly to get it to the level I wanted.

You can confirm it is doing bass management by going to the OSD screen and selecting the BM option. If it brings you to the screen and you can select your crossover points, then you know the HK is doing the bass mgt. Also, listen to a hi-res track on the 6/8-channel DVD-Audio setting and then listen to the same track on the 6/8-channel Direct setting. You will be able to tell the difference. I would set the BM to "Independent" rather than "Global" beacase your setting may vary between digital and analogue.

Of course, this advice is coming from someone who thought his HK 525 blew up when in reality the balance was set all the way to the left, so your mileage may vary.
