Hi everyone I also own the new Oppo bluray player and I also own the Sherwood Newcastle R772 AV that axiom sells. I am new to all this so this may sound like a dumb question. Could someone looking at the specs of my av tell me the best setting for my Oppo? I have it a bitstream now should I change it can my AV decode everything? I get my complete axiom 5.1 set up this week and I really dont know how I should have it set up. I was just going to do it trial and error. My set up is 2 M22s the VP100 center and 2 QS8s for surround and the EP175 sub. I have both HDMI and the 5.1 analog cables if needed. I have all this in the corner of my bedroom with a 46" sony. Hopefully I will be an expert at this stuff a few months but if someone could just give me the best settings for my system it could save my a lot of time. I am just very anxious to start playing movies and music this week.

Do you know if your receiver will process the newest sound formats... Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master? If it will, simply run HDMI to the Sherwood and set the Oppo to bistream. If it won't, but will process audio through HDMI, you can set the Oppo to PCM.

Some players will also do the newest audio formats through analog, but you only need to use this if your receiver will not process them AND it doesn't have HDMI (this is what I currently do as my receiver is a whopping 2 years old)

Ok I just looked it up, the Sherwood will process all formats through HDMI which makes this very simple. Run HDMI from Oppo into the Sherwood. Set Oppo HDMI out to bitstream. Enjoy best sound quality available today :).

You could use either the analog or HDMI with the OPPO but the HDMI/bitstream option that Potatohead described above is the best as well the easiest connection for your OPPO. HDMI/bitstream will allow you to experience all the new audio formats and it will also let you use your Sherwoods superior bass managment settings as opposed to when using analog cables you have to use the OPPO'S bass managment and calibration which is limited and harder to setup.

COOL that means I had it right at bitstream just wanted to make sure. My next question is my AV has this set up microphone should I use it once I get my system this week or is it a waste. I have never used one but I can easily follow the instructions but I want to make sure its not a waste of time.

Ok so let me get this straight, the internal decoding of the Oppo player is not as good as the newer recievers decoding capabilities? Because I was hoping to get the Oppo player since my Denon is also older and doesn't decode the new formats, nor does it have HDMI. So what I'm beginning to understand is that the analog connections don't sound as good as the HDMI connection? I don't really understand why that would be? As much praise as I've read about the new Oppo player on here and on other sites I would have thought the internal decoding of the player would be just as good as any reciever on the market?

The Oppo has great analog sound quality (perhaps better quality DACs than found in many receivers). That isn't the issue. The limitation is you have two settings for the cross over: Off or 80 Hz for all channels set to small.

I've found 80-all-around to be a pretty good fit for me; even when I'm given a choice.

As chris mentioned the DAC in the oppo will be high quality. You will get great sound quality using the analog setup (I use it with the Panasonc BD55 because I do not have HDMI receiver) however the crossover will be fixed at 80 and I believe you will have to setup the speakers as small/larbge as well as set the speaker levels in the menu settings of the OPPO (this is more difficult than setting up a receiver). Also any auddessy/YPAO or room correction/equilizations will not be used because the receiver is simply used to amplify the signal.

It is more likely you will notice a difference in a poorly calibrated setup than would be a dac. A common complaint of the analog setup is the LFE lacks compared to when using the receivers bass management.

I see, so you have to set the speakers to 'small' eh? Wow that does suck balls since the M80's produce such beautiful bass!!! I guess I'll be looking at getting a new Denon after all. Such a shame since my 4802 is an awesome reciever minus the fact that it doesn't have HDMI.

I was really hoping the $500 dollar Oppo would be my cure-all. Now that I'm looking at spending at least $1000 dollars on a 3808 I wonder if I'd be better off just getting a run-of-the-mill BD player to keep costs down. I really wasn't wanting to have to spend $1500 to get the best picture/sound quality possible. Gosh does this hobby ever suck money! Lol

Having mentioned this in an earlier post, one of the features that the BDP83 has that few others have is that it will allow you to use its own internal decoding via LPCM BUT thru the HDMI connection so you will still be able to use the more flexible bass management options of your AVR. I have compared both the bitstream AND LPCM connections for movies via HDMI and the sound, to my ears anyway, is virtually identical. You don't have to hook-up a multitude of cables(5 or 7.1 analog outs) to use the internal decoding of the player(IF your AVR is of recent vintage). If not, don't be concerned, the internal decoding of the BDP83 is first-rate.

I don't know if it's my receiver, but I have the same setup as Dr House (Panasonic BD-55 through analog) and my bass freaking POUNDS... It's about the same as digital but seems a little more smooth. I run my HD DVD player this way as well.

Like was stated before, it's more difficult to setup and it's a lot more wiring so really HDMI is the way to go if you can.
