My kittie got into one of my 5.25" drivers on my M60's and torn into the rubber ring, and dented the aluminum driver. Amie was kind enough to send a replacement to me, but today as I was going to swap them I discovered they do not match. I sent Amie an email, but I figured you fine folk would likely have a good answer as well.

The original driver is marked 5A12-15S192. It has two larger exposed magnetic rings and sits about 1/8" taller than the new driver. The outer ring is stamped FE0312.

The new driver is marked 5A12-15SS. The new driver also does not have any exposed magnetic rings as the back of the driver is encased, which is stamped FE0809.

Should I bother swapping the new driver in?

Thanks!

Craig, I certainly don't have any info about a possible effect from a change in the driver and I doubt that anyone else here would either. If there was a significant difference I doubt that Axiom would have sent it and I'd suspect that it meets the specs of the former driver, but you can wait for a reply as to whether there is in fact a "mismatch".

I'm with John, I highly doubt there is any discernable difference.

fyi...got an email from Amie this morning. Ask expected, they're sonically the same. \:\) I just wanted to be certain.

Best of luck on your repair.

What are you going to do to make sure that your kittie doesn't get back into your speaker??
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/22/08 06:32 AM
You don't have a cat do you? \:\)
Posted By: anthony11 Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/22/08 07:24 AM
Were you running with the grilles off, or did the cat lift it off? I'm somewhat worried about my son doing something like this in a few years, but I gather that kids don't find the speakers as interesting if the drivers are out of sight. The rear ports still worry me, though.

Grills on. He likes to reach up and stretch himself, and one at least one occasion his claws must have reached through the grill and grabbed the driver. He yanked to get loose, and there you have it.

Well, I will tell you what not to do. Don't try to hold him in the sink while you spray him with the hose nozzle for punishment.
A gentleman at my wife's work had his cat fight back (duh!!) and now has an infection in his hand so bad that he might just lose it. Hopefully not, but considering his next specialist appointment is with a surgeon? Well let's just hope he is also an infection specialist.

Wow. That's a really stupid thing to do. I would guess that he also didn't clean the cuts well, and that's even dumber.

there's that perfect avatar again. ;\)

Cat wounds are really nasty.

I learnt that back in skool.

Claws, pointy teeth = deep penetration wounds

Cat = bacteria your body has not seen before

Combination of the above = Oh sh!t.

I'm tempted to quote Gordon Schumway re cats, but that would be rude :-x

What, that dead cats make great oven mitts?

But not great leg warmers. I have a friend who once had a cat decide it didn't like him and attach itself to his leg. He had to bang it, and his leg, against the wall several times to get it to detach. Cats now freak him out.

They are pretty impressive animals. It's amazing that an animal that is as geared up to be a killing machine on the level of a shark ended up a domesticated pet. \:\)

Tru.
My wife tried to prevent our cat from killing birds by putting a bell on his collar. Two hours later, he brings home a squirrel.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 12:48 PM
The bells just teach the smart ones to be even more stealthy.

Funny story, Murph. Wish my cat did that - the squirrels here are out of control. We had to upgrade our bird feeders to be squirrel-proof, so at least we're not offering any more squirrel buffet. Stupid rats with legs. On the bright side, I did get some video of a squirrel getting flipped off our Yankee Flipper. This isn't it, but it's the same idea.

Our cat won't go after the squirrels, sadly. She did play chase with one one day, slowing down when it did, etc. At least she is a good mouser. Half the time I see a mouse or a mole at the doorstep as I'm leaving for work.

Are your rats normally legless?
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 02:24 PM
Must be an East Coast thing.

Erk.

I must have needed my coffee. I guess I was thinking of the old "Pigeons are rats with wings" analogy and tried to extrapolate it to squirrels, but I got distracted by the smell of bagels in the kitchen, and the transdimensional vortices were feeling a little funny to me already, so allow me to propose instead that squirrels are rats with fluffy tails.

With or without legs? I'm confused.

I can tell from your avatar.

You too?? My son used to tell me the one in his left leg was specially tuned to all things sweet. Hence his enormous capacity for the aformentioned delectables while remaining increadibly skinny.

I've never understood why people hate squirrels. I've always loved them. Far more entertaining to watch than birds.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 09:46 PM
Seriously...how can you hate these guys?
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 09:54 PM
You've never been on the UC Berkeley campus, have you? Those little ...things... will take you down, man! Swarms of 'em! You got a crumb of food on you? They want it, and they're gonna take it.

You gotta watch yourself with squirrels...
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 09:58 PM
Bring it on!
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 09:59 PM
But seriously, they're really aggressive on campus, mainly because they've been fed by unsuspecting people a whole lot. They do tend to circle if you're eating lunch outside.

Also: Dude, some of those are totally 'shopped!
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/28/08 10:57 PM
Some sure...but they're still cute!
Posted By: fredk Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/29/08 12:55 AM
Ever since Ice Age I see squirrels in a whole different light.
Posted By: JohnK Re: Mismatched Drivers? - 07/29/08 02:13 AM
Yeah Andrew, it's remarkable how some cats apparently have learned from watching African lions, etc., hunt on TV nature shows the proper technique for stalking squirrels. It's amusing to watch the neighbor's cat creeping slowly forward on her belly toward the squirrel, who's seeing her every move of course, and takes off up a tree when she makes her final lunge.

Apparently coons are a little too much for her to take on unfortunately, and a couple days ago I had to shoot another one off the roof where he was possibly planning an invasion .

...and by "shoot" you meant, "shoo", right? \:\(
