Jack, my interpretation is that the problem is a missing comma after "midway". The max is about 2 o'clock and the min is about 4 o'clock, so 9 would indeed be "midway". If they wanted to suggest 6 or 7 they probably would just have said that. For want of a comma this has now involved two threads in discussion of the matter.
