I also find that for *most* content it helps to look at how high your mains are relative to the screen when configuring the center channel. Most, but not all DVDs seem to mix dialog between the center and the mains, so (for example) if the midrange drivers on your mains are below the screen "center of mass" then putting the center channel above is probably the way to go.

This won't help with dialog tracks hard-mixed to the center channel, but I haven't noticed many of those.
