Most of my heavier metal is also recorded with very crappy sound.
Metallica, Master of Puppets seems to stand out but that's when they broke away a bit from the traditional that I think you enjoy more.

Moving even further away from your preference, their S&M DVD that they recorded with the San Fransisco Symphony is supposed to have exceptional sound quality, although we have never been able to convince JohnK to listen to it, even though it involves a symphony.

I recently really liked listening to DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage but I can't say the sound is demo quality.

I'll have to browse through the artist lists on my Squeezebox tonight to think of some others. I know there are more if I could think of them.

Adding an afterthought. I have two versions of Masters of Puppets. The remastered one sounds way better than the original. Can't remember who did it but I know "Gold" is part of the title.
