I have the M22, VP150, 2X QS8 (Rear Surrounds) and I am getting an SVS sub or two.

I am wondering what the best side surround would be, a QS8 on each side or 2X M2 on each side (4 Ohm) for a total of 4.

The side surrounds will be about 12 - 15 ft from center listening location and about 7' up on the wall.

Go with Chess, get the QS8's.

I'd assume running 2 M2s in parallel on each side. That would probably make the side surround sound too loud compared to the fronts IMHO assuming the same amp power is used all around per channel.

I would calibrate the sound to be the same SPL all around. If not 2 of the M2s, what about a M22 on each side?

May i ask why you decided to put the QSx speakers in the back instead on on the sides?
Typically that is where they are positioned although you state you are looking for direct radiating speakers for the sides.

I've never seen a modern receiver that didn't have a variable gain for each channel to compensate for this.

I will most likely go with the QS8 as you suggested. I read a review that did a blind test and people liked indirect sound (dipole/bipole) in the back and it was more of a toss up for the side speakers depending on the movie. It also said that everyone liked two speakers much better than one.

For music I have read that direct was the way to go.

I will most likly go with the qs8 because I will be mounting on the wall and I don't want to have to find some kind of a braket that allows for the port in the M22.

Take a look at this post that i put up quite some time ago.
comparison of QS8s vs. M22 as surround speakers

It gives my first impressions of using both these types of speakers for music and HT applications. In the end, i went with the QS8s.
