I have to put together another HT system for a friend. Anyway, power is not a problem as he already owns some very nice amps from a stereo set-up. What I'm after is a somewhat inexpensive receiver to use as a pre. Only thing it must have is input specific crossover settings. It can't be a one for all or a global setting.

Other then HK I can't think of anything off the top of my head that is in the $500.00 or so range.

Ideas?

If I am understanding you, there seem to be several. I just read the new Sound and Vision, and they have a budget receiver round up. The Pioneer wins. The price is right and, they all have adjustable Bass-management crossover frequency. For the Pioneer it says: "50 to 200Hz in 5 steps. Does not apply to multi-channel analog input". All three are about the same in that regard. For more info, check out www.soundandvisionmag.com. The article is called Cost Control.
The list price of the pioneer is $395.00, US$ It sounds like it would be a nice little receiver if you lived in an apartment.

yamaha has a good rep for being a goo pre as well. I don't know if I'd bother with HK for a PRE.

John, if different crossover settings for different speaker groups are really a must(my view is that it's a minor factor in most setups), then the less expensive HK 235 and 335 appear to be the only candidates.

I think NeverHappy is looking for the ability to run different bass management setups for different inputs, eg. "when I'm watching DVDs the mains are set to Small, but when I'm listening to CDs the mains are set to Large".

I know some receivers besides HK can do that but I don't remember offhand... but I do have a folder of downloaded receiver manuals sitting around somewhere

Thanks all. My buddy has bumped up his budget and his expectations a little. As a result, I have a Yamaha RXV-4600 on order for him.

As I always do, it will be coming home with me for a day or two so I can play around with it!

Cost for new computer $900.

Cost for DSL $34.

Reading about Neverhappy's quest to demo everything in the audio world, priceless.

I'm looking at around a week also but I will let you know when it shows up.

I have to read up a little on this thing. It was a spur of the moment move to go with this one. I don't even know if it has the independent crossover settings per input that I was after.
