Hello everyone, new user here. I'm making my first foray into the world of high end stereo and HT equipment and I've got a couple questions.

1) Will sound quality suffer if I place the rear speakers on an end table instead of mounting them? My couch will have its back facing the middle of the room so I can't mount them on a wall. The alternative would be to use one of the stands on this site, the problem with that is that if its not stable enough my cat will knock it over and possibly damage the components.

2)Is a Yamaha RX-v2300 receiver a good choice to go with the Epic 50? Any other good choices in the same price range?

Thanks in advance.

You cannot just put the QS series surrounds on a table, since that will obliterate the bottom-firing woofer. If you have to place them on a table, you need to use some spacers or "feet" in order to create at least 1-2" of clearance beneath. What is the distance from your couch to the back wall? Many people place the L/R surround speakers far back from the listening position in a 5.1 system, with excellent results.

The Yamaha should not have any problems driving the Epic 50 combo.

The room is 23x17, with the front speakers on the narrow end on one side and the listening area about 10-12 feet away from the back wall (can't give totally exact measurements since I haven't moved into the place yet).

sushi is darn fast at replying today,

I have placed the QSx surrounds on shelves before. In fact, that is where i have one of mine placed right now.
If you go to the axiom wallofame and scroll down to my first HT pics entries, you will see the QS8 sitting on its shelf.
However, as sushi mentioned, put some little rubber feet underneath them to lift up the bottom so the underside woofer can be heard. I used some 3/4" rubber furniture feet from Canadian Tire (also found at Walmarts, Kmarts, and many grocery stores).
